One of the things we all love about Christmas is the ability to dress up our homes in festive adornment. Many home design magazines and blogs have recently featured garland made of sparkling glittered balls. This Glittered Ball Garland project takes this same idea and transforms it into an inexpensive and easy craft project that can be completed in as little as an afternoon!
For this project, you will need:
- Several Styrofoam balls in either uniform or varying sizes (usually available by the bag at most local craft supply stores)
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
- Krylon Glitter Blast Glitter Spray in Cherry Bomb, Krylon Glitter Blast Glitter Spray in Lucky Green, Krylon Glitter Blast Glitter Spray in Silver Flash, Krylon Glitter Blast Glitter Spray in Golden Glow, or a combination of these colors
- Toothpicks
- Small paper cups
- Butcher's twine
- Newspaper and/or a large drop cloth
For easiest cleanup when you are done with this holiday project, start by making sure that the area where you will be crafting is first covered with a few sheets of old newspaper and/or a large drop cloth. This will protect the area from any paint or primer drippings during the course of the project.
Lay out the foam balls in the order in which you will want them strung on the garland. This is especially important if you are using a variety of different sized Styrofoam balls or if you are varying the colors in your garland. Carefully stick one to two toothpicks through the center of one foam ball so that it forms a hole. Place the toothpicks so that one is sticking out of each end of the whole by a few inches. This will enable you to balance the foam on the toothpicks with placed inside of a paper cup. Not only does this make the painting process much easier, it makes it less messy. Repeat this process for each of the foam balls.
Prime the top side of each foam ball piece with an even coat of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Wait an hour or so before flipping the foam balls over inside the cups to expose the unprimed side. Prime this area the same way and dry completely. Do not skip priming, as it helps the glitter spray adhere a bit better.
Paint on side of each ball in the Krylon Glitter Blast Glitter Spray color of your choice. Once it has dried, flip the ball over and paint the entire side. You should now have several Styrofoam balls that are completely glittered in the colors of your choice. Dry completely.
Remove the toothpicks. Carefully string the butcher's twine through the holes in the center of the Styrofoam balls. Keep the string taught so that it cannot be seen between the glittered orbs. Hang the garland, as desired.
