Christmas Crafts for Kids: Paper Plate Poinsettia

Sandra Bacon
Here we are again at Christmas crafts for kids, and this time we'll be making a paper plate poinsettia. This is another easy and exciting project for you and your kids. I like this craft because it doesn't take too much time and it can be very soothing and therapeutic for you, and a fun project for the kids.

This paper plate poinsettia can be used as decoration to hang from ceilings, in door ways, you can put them on the walls and if you make them small enough, you can even hang them from your Christmas tree.

The materials are not expensive and this will make an excellent project for a Saturday afternoon or Saturday night with the kids. What better way to have family night than making Christmas crafts for kids. The materials you will need and the instructions are listed below.

Materials For Paper Plate Poinsettia

● 8 ½ inch paper plate
● Red construction paper
● Yellow construction paper
● Thin ribbon or yarn (red, white or green)
● Glue
● Silver Glitter
● Green Paint (any kind that's safe for kids)
● Small paint brush
● Scissors
● Pencil

Instructions For Paper Plate Poinsettia

1. The first thing you have to do is paint the bottom of your paper plate green.

2. Now you can cut a ½ inch diameter circle out of the yellow construction paper. This is the center of your poinsettia.

3. While the plate is drying, draw a poinsettia leaf on the red construction paper, then use it as a template to draw the other leaves. The amount you make will depend on the size of the paper plate you use, and how full you want your poinsettia.

3. When the paint is dry, glue the yellow circle to the center of your plate, then begin gluing your poinsettia leaves on the paper plate, around the yellow circle.

4.Start working in the center around the yellow circle then work your way out toward the edge of the plate.

5. When you have the first layer of leaves glued to your plate, fill in the spaces with a second layer... working your way out toward the edge.

This is pretty much all there is to making a paper plate poinsettia. The most time consuming part of the whole project will be drawing and cutting out the leaves. If you make this a family project, you can get one person to draw the leaves, another to cut the leaves, and someone else to glue them on the plate.

If you want glitter on your poinsettia, now is the time to place a little glue where you want the glitter to show. After you have done this, sprinkle the glitter on the glue and shake off the excess. If you want to hang your plate, make a loop of the ribbon or yarn and glue it to your plate.

Christmas crafts for kids are really fun to do, and this is something you should never deny yourself and your kids. This is a lovely way to spend time with them, and it gets everyone in the holiday spirit.

I love this project because you can make your paper plate poinsettias different sizes to place as decorations around your home or to hang on your Christmas tree. I've used this same idea by cutting out an 8 ½ inch circle on a green poster board, then place my red leaves on them.

Since the foundation is flat, I can place candy dishes on them, candles, fruit bowls, nut bowls and even cakes. This particular Christmas craft for kids can be used in multiple ways, and I think it would be well worth your time to make the paper plate poinsettia.

If you think you will have trouble putting this together, please take a look at the picture. You can also take a look at another article, Christmas Crafts for Kids: Candy Train if you're interested in making more Christmas crafts.

What a clever idea. Adding glitter is a nice touch--love the bling!
