Christmas Day Movies with Trailers

Anne Wright
Christmas day movies are Christmas traditions for people who want to get out of the house. These are 4 Christmas movie releases with trailers so you can pick your Christmas day movie. There's Alvin and the Chipmunks or more adult fare.

Christmas Day Movies: It's Complicated

Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin star in this film directed by Nancy Myers. Streep is courted by a conventionally suitable partner (Martin) while having an affair with her ex-husband (Baldwin) who is now married to the younger woman he was previously having an affair with.

It's a great cast, but the story has all the above stale devices plus the young wife is desperate to get pregnant. I was just desperate for the trailer to end. It was painful to watch repetitive scenes of mature actresses shrieking in a manner that would embarrass many adolescents. Martin and Baldwin are hosting the 2010 Oscars, but I'll be disappointed if this wins any awards.

Christmas Day Movies: Sherlock Holmes

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law star in this film directed by Guy Ritchie. Holmes (Downey) and Watson (Law) save England from an arch villain.

I'm used to older Sherlock Holmes adaptations with less action but I liked the trailer. Any movie promoting itself as "Holmes for the holiday" obviously isn't taking itself too seriously. Downey and Law are an interesting team, and Watson gets more of the limelight than usual.

Christmas Day Movies: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Christopher Plummer, Lily Cole and Heath Ledger star in this Christmas day movie directed by Terry Gilliam. The owner of a traveling show tries to save his daughter after previously pledging her to the devil in exchange for his own youth.

As a Monty Python fan, I'll take a chance on anything by Terry Gilliam. It's difficult to judge the trailer because the visual effects need a big screen, but it looks interesting and it has Heath Ledger's last performance.

Christmas Day Movies: Alvin and the Chipmunks

Jason Lee, Zachary Levi and Drew Barrymore provide the voices in this "squeakuel" directed by Betty Thomas. The chipmunks try to save their school's music program.

I think the chipmunks are cuter than the movie critics who don't like them. Of all the Christmas movie releases that could have been for all kids, this one is still rated PG for some suggestive dancing and jokes but it's mostly free of violence or scares.
