Christmas Deaths

A Dangerous Season No Matter What

Ashby Koss
As the Christmas season comes to a close a look back over the short season proved to be a very deadly and dangerous time this go around. There have been numerous violent acts, either in malls on personal property or any other place that seemed to be unlucky enough. What exactly cause these outbursts of violence may never be fully known, but it sure make one think about going out to the malls for all day shopping or stopping st secluded gas stations for gas at anytime of the day. The recent Christmas time mall shootings have gotten the most press time and of course are the major issue that comes to most Americans minds when Christmas violence is mentioned. But there are also numerous gas station attacks and even Christmas day attacks and murders.

These events, while the reason may never be known, may be all linked to a very simple idea. This is not the ideas of video games or movies but of S.A.D. a very simply disorder. This disorder affects more people than most realize of acknowledge, usually due to the fact that mild cases are everywhere. Some specialist even think that every human goes through Seasonal Attitude Disorder or (S.A.D.) at one point or another. This disorder can effect moods, reasoning, attitudes, rational and many other factors that can all be pushed to breaking point. When someone gets overly depressed or mentally conflicted, weird things start to happen. When someone who normally has some small issues mentally starts getting affected by S.A.D. the results can be disastrous. These are the ones that take up arms and go on shooting sprees or decided that shoppers or people out and about need to be "taught" a lesson. S.A.D. slightly effects everyone, this is the main reason for everyone treating the different seasons with different attitudes and reactions.

With these factors in play, and many reasons to go out either for shopping or for gas, it may not be too late to take some form of protection. Whether it is pepper spray or mace to a baton or purse stun zapper. Whatever method you choose the number one weapon is attention, pay attention to your surroundings and if you feel uncomfortable then get out of the situation whether it is a dim parking lot o a long walk to a car, if you ask most retail stores they will let someone walk you to your car for safety, they so not want the bad press that comes with a hurt customer. There are reasons for the madness but sometimes they are so out of this world that you cannot even predict or safely assume safety.

While S.A.D. may contribute to some of the violence it may not contribute it all. With different families giving Christmas taking on new meanings and new levels of stress with internet ordering and more technological demanding children and parents, maybe the combines stress with the Seasonal Attitude Disorder is enough to "crack the shell". Either way they split the shell is still split and damaged, it only time until the nut comes out.
