Christmas Decorating Ideas for Warmer Climates

Amy Stepp
Decorating for Christmas would not be the same if you didn't have the outside lit up as bright as the northern star. However, when you live in a region where the weather is not suitable for the beginning of winter, then it is hard for you to come up with great Christmas decorating ideas for the outside. I know because I live in Georgia where we may see some snow once in every four years or so. Never have I seen snow in December and it is never too cold out there as well. So I have had to come up with many different ways and ideas on how to decorate the outside of my house in the warmer weather. Now I would like to pass on some of my ideas to you.

Decorating Idea #1
Inflatables

Inflatables are a great way to add a Christmas touch to your yard without having to worry about how to decorate certain lights in certain positions. Some of my favorite Christmas inflatables are found at www.walmart.com and at any Walmart store as well. The 8' Tall Air-blown Inflatable Penguin's Mailing Letters to Santa is three penguins standing on a snow spot dropping letters in the mail box to Santa. Priced at only $46. The next great inflatable from Walmart has to be the Air-blown Christmas Inflatable Santa on Vacation, 7' Tall and it prices for $75. The reason why I like this one is because it features Santa sitting on the beach under a palm tree relaxing away. For me it screams, Santa doesn't need any snow to have a Merry Christmas. No matter what type of inflatable you have place them throughout your yard. There is no strategic plan on where to put them because they are all the decoration you will need to create an outdoor Christmas display.

Decorating Idea #2
Winter Windows

Walmart, Home Depot or any other store of your choice will always carry a cans of fake aerosol snow. Usually the prices for a can of fake snow range around a dollar a can, however with the economy on the fritz this year I am sure they are going to be a little bit more. However, they are still a cheap enough to use as a great Christmas decoration especially for warmer climate areas. Count how many windows you have in your home. Buy at least 2 cans per window. Spray the whole window on the outside minus a head size circle in the middle to resemble a place where someone would of wiped off to see out of. To make it extra special, have the kids write words into the snow sprayed on the window like "welcome winter" or "stop here Santa". You can add lights to border the windows to make it even more decorative, but if you do, make sure they are colored lights because white lights will make the snow look to bright.

Decorating Idea #3
Christmas Trees
If you live in an area like I do, then pine trees are the most popular type of trees that grace your property. Most of our pine trees are around 6 feet tall and still baby trees. I always have liked to decorate these trees around my yard just like I would the inside Christmas tree. However, it is hard when you have to stretch electric cord to five or more different trees so I try to buy battery operated lights to help in this project. I will use a star on top of each tree and place ornaments all over the trees. Usually I will buy the Dollar Tree ornaments so if they do break I didn't waste to much money in the process. Sometimes I can reuse the ornaments for the next year, which helps alot. You do not just have to have pine trees in your yard to create this look. Any sapling will do. Just make sure the tree is big enough to withstand lights and ornaments hanging on them. If the tree is to young the branches will bend and never grow right, if they grow at all.

Decorating Idea #4
Snow Top Trees and Bushes
Over at www.sno-wonder.com they offer you a way to have a snow like feel in your yard. You can purchase a SNOCUBE package, for $24.95, which is a 9 gallon mix that will cover a 3 by 4 foot area that is around once inch deep. There snow is man made snow that is earth friendly. All you need to do is add water to their snow powder and the snow will erupt into fake snow that mimics real snow remarkably. After you place your order and receive your SNOCUBE pack, pick a day that is nice out and dry to work in the yard. Mix your snow and place it on the tops of bushes in your yard, tree tops of sapling trees and even around the walk ways. Since snow does not glow, at night you can place a spot light to project onto the bushes and trees so people will see the snow. This snow look gives you a feel that a fresh light midst of snow feel over night and just barely covered the tops of everything. Add some colored lights to the bushes and trees however place them rather deeply into the branches and next to the trunk so they glow under the snow and not on top.

Decorating Idea #5
Tropical Christmas Trees
If you live in an area that is close to the water and it is in a warmer climate area, like Florida, then try decorating the outside of your house with non-traditional Christmas trees and use palm trees. Over at www.walmart.com they have a 6' Pre-Lit Artificial Palm Tree, 150 Clear Lights for only $48 each. Buy a couple of these and place in your yard where ever they will be the most visibly seen. This gives your Christmas decorations a tropical theme!
