If you live in areas where it doesn't snow you can always adorn the yard with fake snow. Hang candy canes and tin icicles from your trees if you have any trees and even cover them in fake snow. Put a fake snowman in the yard, full with all the necessary trimmings like a scarf, hat and everything. You can even make your own from styrofoam that you can purchase in different size balls for different body parts which you can stick together with tooth picks and glue.
Of course you cannot go wrong with lights. If you want to keep it simple and do not want to make or buy anything just adorn everything outside with strings and strings of Christmas lights and Christmas balls. This might not be impressive during the day but at night your yard will look spectacular.
Simply decorate everything in your yard with garland. Wrap it around your mailbox, trees, whatever you can find that can hold a string of garland. Place a big Santa in your yard complete with a massive bag containing empty boxes and old newspapers to make it look like there are presents inside. If there is no rain on the way wrap old boxes and shoe boxes up in Christmas wrapping paper and big ribbons and place them underneath your trees. Make sure to tell the neighbors that there's nothing in them though!
If you want to display a more magical side of Christmas, you can adorn your entire yard with angels and bells and lights. Angels can be bought very cheaply at discount or thrift stores, especially Styrofoam ones or they can be made from cardboard and DIY kits. Hang bells on almost everything a bell can hang from and, of course, decorate them with Christmas lights to create enchantment at night.
You can't go wrong with figurines. Mix it up a bit and have a nativity display along with Santa and reindeer. You can also include Christmas displays from other cultures in order to show your open mindedness and appreciation for diversity.
No matter what you do to brighten up your yard, make sure to have fun with it and try to include the whole family. Not all families are crafty but with so many DIY kits available at fairly cheap prices, making ornaments yourself can be fun and easy.
