Christmas Employment: Where to Find a Job for the Holiday Season

Jody Morse
Holiday employment can be an ideal option for some people. Whether you're a college student who is home for the holidays or someone who wants to earn some extra cash for Christmas presents, there are plenty of opportunities out there during this time of year. Here are some suggestions on where to find a job for the holiday season.

Find Retail Jobs for the Holiday Season

While sales may be down in comparison to other years, most stores are still not prepared for the number of shoppers that they will see for the holiday season. Your local newspaper is likely to be filled with job advertisements for local department stores and other retailers. Malls have many Christmas employment opportunities, ranging from stores to the small stands that tend to be more common during the holiday season.

Also keep in mind that it can't hurt to try local mom and pop retailers. If there are local stores that sell candles, Christmas ornaments, and other knickknacks, these can make for excellent holiday jobs. Some of these stores may not advertise to save money, but often only have a few workers - who are usually relatives - year-round. These stores can make for good Christmas employment opportunities.

Consider Santa and Elf Jobs for Christmas Employment

Many retailers have Santa Clause and Elf positions for the holiday season. These jobs can be a great option for anyone who is seeking employment over the holidays. Note that in order to pursue this Christmas employment opportunity, it is important to like children and also to be able to pass a child abuse background check.

Apply for Delivery Jobs for the Holiday Season

With so many people ordering gifts online for the holidays, there is a strong demand for helpers and drivers at UPS and FedEx. Although most of these jobs are for delivery helpers, there is also a need for drivers during this time too. The benefit to this Christmas employment opportunity is that it can often increase your chances of securing employment with UPS or FedEx in the future.

Think About Babysitting Kids or Pets for Christmas Employment

If you want to make some additional cash over the holiday season, you may want to think about looking for babysitting and pet-sitting jobs for this time. Many parents need to find a sitter for their kids while they are home from school for the holidays. Pet-sitting jobs are also common during this time when families go home to visit relatives for the holidays - which may include Christmas, Hanukah, and Kwanzaa.

Anyone who is looking for a job for the holidays should keep in mind that there are plenty of options out there to choose from. Whether you are looking for Christmas employment opportunities to earn some extra cash or want to find a job - even if it is temporary - in this tough economy, there are options out there.
