Christmas Events in Indianapolis

Annie Patterson
The holiday season is a magical time. Houses twinkle with lights, Christmas carols fill the air and children patiently await the arrival of Santa Claus. There are many fun and affordable Christmas events and attractions to see in Indianapolis. As a life-long resident of Indianapolis, I have attended many of these events, always thoroughly enjoying them.

1. Monument Circle- During the summer months, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument is an amazing sight to see in its own right. But beginning the day after Thanksgiving each year, it is transformed into the world largest Christmas tree. Just shy of 285 feet tall, the monument is covered with 4,748 lights, and 52 strands of garland. The circle itself is decorated with huge toy soldiers and candy canes. There is also a mailbox to send your special letters to Santa Claus! There is no charge to view the tree, so this is definitely a must see.

2. Christmas at the Zoo - The Indianapolis Zoo offers a special Christmas event each year. Although all the outdoor exhibits are closed, it doesn't take away from the experience one bit. The indoor and cooler exhibits are all open. This includes the deserts, the oceans, with a special shark petting exhibit, and the amazing under water dolphin exhibit. The best part is the lights! Soft, twinkling lights cover everything! Admission is very reasonable with adult admission being $8.50, children 2-12 and seniors are $7.00. Christmas at the Zoo runs December 4-30, 12pm-9pm, with full Christmas activities beginning at 5pm.

3. The Indianapolis Children's Museum - One of the world's best children's museums, they definitely do Christmas right! Featuring a two story Yule slide, indoor ice skating, pretend cookie decorating area, a snow castle filled with slides, and a meet and greet with Santa himself, there is something for everyone! All of this, in edition to many other amazing and educational areas, you simply must see the Children's Museum during the holiday season! Runs November 27th-January 10th, 10am-5pm. The Museum is closed Mondays. Admission is $14.50 for adults, children 2-17 $9.50.

4. Indiana State Museum - The Indiana State Museum offers many Christmas themed events. These range from teas with Mrs. Clause, breakfast with Santa, a Christmas puppet show, and a Christmas themed train ride. These events vary in price and dates. Visit www.indianamuseum.org for more information.

5. Reynolds Farm Equipment - This may sound like an odd place for a Christmas event, but it is an awe inspiring sight! They have every lighted display you can imagine, from Noah's Ark, to a barn with all the animals, to a giant abominable snowman decorating a huge tree, while a train drives through his legs. They even have a lake with ice skaters. Located in Fishers, just minutes north of Indianapolis. There is no charge.
