What to Buy and Where to Buy British Food and Gifts

Karen Reams
Tis the season to be jolly but for many Brits living in the States it can also be bittersweet.

So if you have any friends that have hailed from the UK cheer them up with some wonderful gifts to remind them of home.

At this point it must be pointed out that food usually does the job.

A huge Christmas favorite with any Brit would be a gift tin of Cadbury's Heroes, Quality Street or Cadbury Roses. For those not in the know these are delicious chocolates that somehow taste different when coming out of a Christmas tin. There are not many homes in the UK that won't have one of these tucked away somewhere over Christmas.

Or choose a scrumptious box of Milk Tray, Black Magic or Dairy Box. Again all edible these are boxes of chocolates that are popular amongst Brits. In fact one of the commercials for Milk Tray had a saying "The lady loves Milk Tray". So should you have a British lady in your life this would make a lovely surprise.

For children and adults alike selection boxes are always a huge hit. These are festive boxes that come filled with various bars of popular chocolate such as Chocolate Flakes, Topics, Cadbury's Buttons, Crunchie, Curly Wurly or Fudge Bars.

The boxes usually have cut out games on the back so nothing gets wasted.

Another thoughtful idea would be to add some British items to their Christmas dinner and tea table.

Let's start with the Christmas dinner table. A box of crackers would be much appreciated. Nothing like pulling a cracker sharing the joke and novelty whilst wearing a silly hat for the rest of the meal. No Christmas table is complete without crackers.

Onto the food side of Christmas dinner. Well, along with cranberry sauce with Turkey a nice bread sauce is always popular. And Colman's produce a very nice bread sauce mix.

After dinner Brits then like to indulge in some Christmas Pudding with maybe a dash of brandy sauce or a blob of brandy butter before settling down for the Queen's speech. Matthew Walker produce various different Christmas puddings all made with succulent cherries, seasonal spices, juicy sultans and some sort of alcohol such as brandy, whiskey or a traditional ale.

We now move onto tea-time. To help spice a Brit's tea table up you could surprise them with a gift of mince -pies perhaps with a jar of clotted cream or a traditional Christmas cake.

Yes, many Brits just eat their way through the Christmas season but it is fun.

The great thing is all these items can be purchased on the internet at reasonable prices.

Below are a list of on-line retailers where all the above and lots more can be purchased.

British Food Shop

British Supplies

British Goods On-line

Jolly Grub

English Tea Store

This is a particular favorite as there is free shipping on orders over $75

Of course there are many more ideas that can be found at any of the above sites to make sure that your British friends have a Christmas with a familiar feel.

So start browsing and make your Britisg friends really feel that Santa has remembered them.
