Christmas Gift Ideas for College Kids

Abby Willow

Kids in college are easy to please when it comes to Christmas. You want to get your college kids a great resourceful gift that they can use, but you also want to get them a gift for Christmas that they can enjoy. Since college kids are usually in a funk when it comes to money and things they need, getting them the perfect gift for Christmas is not only essential, but is sure to be greatly appreciated. Here are some great Christmas gift ideas for college kids.

You cannot go wrong with cash for your college kids. Cash will be so eagerly accepted that it doesn't matter if it's $20 or upwards of $100. However, if you want to have control over what that cash is spent on to a point (in other words, you don't want that cash to go toward a hangover), then consider a gift card instead. You can give your college kids a gas card so they can fuel their cars, a gift card to Wal-Mart so they can buy essentials like socks or food, or you can even give your college kids a gift card to a cheap fast food place, like Subway or Burger King so they can eat out now and then.

Why not help your college kids out with tuition or books? Sure, there is financial aid, but you can surprise your kids for Christmas by giving them a hand-written note that says that you will buy their books for the spring semester so they can rest easier with their student loans. College kids trying to stretch out their student loans and financial aid all through the semester would love to know that you are going to pitch in for their books come the new semester. A sigh of relief is a wonderful Christmas gift for college kids.

If your college kids live in a dorm, then something like a mini fridge is a great idea. Food is a wonderful choice as well, as all dorms have access to a community kitchen or at least a microwave. A box full of food items like Top Ramen, peanut butter and jelly, crackers, canned soups, granola bars, and other snacks that can help tide your college kids over for a while are great ideas that will not go unnoticed for Christmas. You can also give a single place setting for Christmas for your college kids along with silverware, so they have the eating utensils they need.

Why not surprise your college kid by paying their cell phone bill for a month or 2 for Christmas, or paying their rent in advance for a month if they live off campus? A gift of financial freedom again is a gift that your college kid will simply love beyond measure. Again, if you want to help your college kids out financially for Christmas but you still want control over where the money goes, this is a great way to help them out and know where your gift is going at the same time.

I just received an awesome gift that I never even thought I would want until I got it- a sweatshirt with my college name on it. You can buy bumper stickers, key chains, sweatshirts or sweat pants, etc, that brag of your college kids' college name that they will cherish long after they graduate. These little gifts can become great memories and memorabilia years down the line, and aren't too pricey of a gift for Christmas. This is a great suggestion for the college kid who already has everything they need.

Don't forget about the little personal touches from home for your college kids for Christmas. If your college kids have a favorite meal, prepare it for them near Christmas, give them a scrapbook of family photos they can enjoy, send them back to school with their favorite stuffed animal or blankie from childhood. In addition to a simple hug, gift card, and well wishes, these little personal gifts can make all the difference for your college kids becoming independent adults.

I always liked food, cash and sweaters. I was always cold and never had money for new clothes. Oh, and I had to laugh a little when I saw these two phrases together: "... send them back to school with their favorite stuffed animal or blankie from childhood" and "these little personal gifts can make all the difference for your college kids becoming independent adults." I know you didn't mean it quite like that, but it made me laugh. :)
