Christmas Gift Ideas: Top Ten DVDs Under $20

Top DVDs to Give as Christmas Gifts

Chris McCarthy
Everybody likes movies. Let me rephrase that--everybody likes at least one movie.

This holiday season, make it easy on yourself. When in doubt on what gift to give your friends and family for Christmas this year, get them a movie. DVDs are pretty cheap and easy to choose.

Click on the title of the movies in the following list to see what they cost on Amazon. All the movies on this list are under $20. You should be able to find one or more movies on this list for several people you know.

Top Ten DVDs for Christmas gifts:

Christmas Gift DVD 1)Night at the Museum. This is a very funny, family friendly movie starring Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, and Owen Wilson. The exhibits in the Museum of Natural History come to life at night, forcing security guard Ben Stiller to deal with the craziness that ensues. This is a steal at $14.99.

Christmas Gift DVD 2) The Princess Bride. This is a classic movie starring Cary Elwes and Robin Wright in a fairy tale action comedy with great scenery, dialogue, and very family friendly tone. Super cheap at $10.49.

Christmas Gift DVD 3)The Illusionist. Starring Edward Norton and Paul Giamatti, this intriguing tale of a celebrated magician named Eisenheim (Norton) is set in turn-of-the-century Vienna. The movie has a magical, almost fairy tale quality to it, filled with intrigue and adventure. This is a great Christmas gift. It's going for $10.99 at Amazon.

Christmas Gift DVD 4)The Devil Wears Prada. This movie, based on a book of the same title by "chick-lit" author Lauren Weisberger is definitely a good selection for any lady in your life. This coming-of-age story stars Meryl Streep as the demonic fashion magazine editor and her suffering assistant played by Anne Hathaway.

Christmas Gift DVD 5)Office Space. Mike Judge's comedy classic about one man whose plan to rise above the shackles of his cubicle and his annoying boss is one of the funniest movies about work ever made. I think anyone on your list would like this movie, but especially college-aged guys. This movie is a steal at 10 bucks.

Christmas Gift DVD 6) Boondock Saints. FBI agent Paul Smecker (Willem Dafoe) is surprised to discover the killers of brutal Russian thugs in Boston are Irish twin brothers (Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus) who believe they've been chosen to rid the world of evil. This movie has a lot of action, great scenes, and classic dialogue. At right around $10 you can't go wrong with this choice.

Christmas Gift DVD 7) Walk the Line. This Johnny Cash biopic won critical praise and blockbuster success when it came out. It's just as good on video. This is truly a movie that anyone can enjoy, especially music fans. For Johnny Cash fans, this is a must-have.

Christmas Gift DVD 8)Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. This is a good action movie adapted from the Fantastic Four comic books. This is good for not only comic book lovers, but action/adventure movie fans as well.

Christmas Gift DVD 9)Eragon.. This family-friendly movie is great for fans of the Harry Potter movies and The Chronicles of Narnia, but is mostly aimed toward children and parents. Eragon is priced at just over 10 bucks at Amazon.

Christmas Gift DVD 10)Ratatouille. This is a great Disney/Pixar animated movie for the whole family. The story centers on a rat who longs to become a great chef. With the help of a boy in Paris, he achieves his dream.

Here are two more "bonus" Christmas movie suggestions.

Christmas Gift DVD 11)Mr. and Mrs. Smith. This movie, starring the formidable media juggernaut Brangelina is a funny action romantic comedy with a funny supporting role by Vince Vaughn. You can't beat the $10.99 price tag.

Christmas Gift DVD 12)Shrek the Third. Everyone's seen this one and you've probably seen the first two. The third installment of the Shrek series maintains the charm of the first two movies, but is lacking in the "cohesive story" department. But don't worry, kids love it.
