Christmas Gifts for 2008: Inexpensive Options

Stephanie Michael
You made a list and you checked it twice. You budgeted carefully and wrapped everything in festive colors. You're ready to relax and enjoy the holiday season. Its then that you realize you forgot to buy for your child's teacher or for your neighbor who's organizing the neighborhood Christmas party. Sometimes you simply forget someone and need to get something last minute. By using a little creativity you can create unique and thoughtful gift ideas. Here are a few suggestions that are easy to get and even easier on the wallet.

A Date Night- Purchase gift cards from local restaurants or movie theatres. Regal Cinemas offer gift certificates that can be used in any Regal Cinema in the country and never expire or lose value. Most local restaurants and all chain restaurants carry gift certificates. Often $25 will significantly reduce a couples bill making it easier to justify a night out. This gift is perfect for couples, parents, grandparents, and anyone else you know who likes a nice night out. For presentation, use a garment box and on the outside write Date in a box. Line the inside with colorful tissue paper and use a little tape to hold the certificate in the center.

A Good Morning- buy a bag of gourmet coffee and a nice mug. Starbucks is always a good place to find interesting new coffee blends but local markets can also carry some quality beans. Try to get a bag of coffee that fits inside of the mug so that it can all be wrapped in a small bag or with tissue paper tied at the top with ribbon. This is a perfect gift for teachers or impromptu secret Santa's.

Can you take a message? - go to your local office supply store and pick up some colorful and quirky post-its. Maybe some pens or a fun desk set. This is a great kind of gift for a secret Santa at the office or any business professionals you may need to buy for. This is an unusual but very practical gift they'll definitely appreciate.

A taste of Italy- Purchase a colander and fill it with garlic, pasta, a wooden spoon and a jar of pasta sauce. If you feel up to it, you can make this gift extra personal by making the tomato sauce yourself. This gift is great for just about anyone and especially for bachelors in need of a quick and home cooked meal.

A jar of cookies- Purchase a cookie jar. It can be generic or reflect the recipient's personality and fill with home baked cookies. Since most of us are baking like crazy anyway it's easy to make a few extra batches for surprise visitors, coworkers, or teachers.

You don't have to spend a lot to give a great gift that will be appreciated and enjoyed. Think outside of the normal sweater or baths set and think of things that the person can use or eat. They'll appreciate the practicality and think of you while enjoying it. If it's the thought that counts during the holiday season, than these gifts are priceless. Happy Holidays!

I'm going to teach all over the world. I want to experience the things that other people just dream about. I want to see the wonders of man and of nature. I will learn something new everyday. I'll do it all...  View profile

Thanks! That gift works for just about anything. I was thinking about doing a BBQ basket for my dad with vacuum packed baby back ribs, BBQ sauce, and utensils in a big colorful bowl. I just have to remember to store perishables in the fridge until its time to give the gift =D
