Christmas Gifts that Gives Back

The Top 5 Charities to Donate to During the Christmas Holiday

Dee Davis
Christmas may have many meanings; nonetheless, it's that time of the year when Christ's birth is celebrated, when families spend quality time together, loving, hoping for, and believing in something greater than themselves. It's a holiday which is recognized annually, all over the world. This Christian holiday has become a commercialized-gift-giving holiday. The malls are packed with people eagerly looking for the perfect present for their family, friends, co-workers and that significant other in their lives. However, the flip side of that is it's also a very lonely time of year for millions of people (not only in America), but around the world. It's a reminder to many about what they are lacking; I am referring to the millions that are in shelters, homeless on the streets or separated from their loved ones. There are ways to reach out and connect with those in need, in an effort to give back. Usually all it takes to make a person feel special or to put a smile on one's face; is the ability for one to reach out and connect by showing that he or she cares. Every year millions of people spend hundreds of millions of dollars on gifts. However, there are a listless number of things that one can do to make one's life richer, but also someone else's; especially at a time when our country and the world is going through a recession.

I am as guilty of this as the next person; every year I shop for a large number of people or I contribute a monetary amount to the purchases made. However, there are tons of charities out there that offer different degrees of support to children and families throughout the year. The first that I would like to touch on is the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This is one of the more prominent charities in North America, which accepts volunteers as well as monetary donations throughout the year. In addition, Toys for Tots, is another foundation in which toys, money or other items can be donated. Another charity is Operations Christmas child, which gives gifts to children around the world. In order to donate, one must fill a shoebox with gives small toys, school supplies, and other gifts. Another requirement is to include a note for the child as a testimony to God's love. My Two Front Teeth is another great organization which offers gifts online to underprivileged children. The child's information is entered through an online database and donors are able to choose a child to support (or donate to). Another interesting yet unique option is the Angel Tree. It's a Christian based fellowship, where donors are able to provide gifts to children of parents who are in prison. The gifts are delivered by the local church, along with the gospel of Christ.

Christmas means different things to different people. However, no matter what the meaning is to you, we cannot deny that Christmas is an international holiday that is observed as time for family to gather. This is the time of year to reach out and give to those who are less fortunate. There are lots of national and international charities that one can give to. Like many, I too, am tired of the same thing every year. We all agree that Christmas is primarily for the children; however, I think that some of us forget about those who are without. We all have it in us to give, however, most people feel paralyzed because there are some many organizations out there and they are unsure about where to begin, and which ones to give to. However, it's important to think about what's important to you and then find an organization that reflects those values and beliefs, and let that guide you.

I agree with some of your points, but some I disagree with. Christmas is what you make of it. Its about family. My wife doesnt want to spend time with my family because she says she feels uncomfortable. If Christmas is about family, why can my wife understand this importance and at least allow me and our kids to visit with my family for a couple of hours on Christmas Eve. Can you write an article about that.
