You are stressed about money. Being stressed about money is a key sign that you are overspending on Christmas. Sure you will be spending money buying gifts but when you start spending too much stress will come. Arguments with your spouse may arise. Decisions about paying for bills or other needs will arise. If you are finding your self stressed out about money during the Christmas season, re-evaluate your spending. Ask yourself, am I going over board. Make a decision to have a plan and stick with it.
You are unaware of how much you've spent. It's real easy to get caught up in the holiday season. If you have a personality that causes you to want to please everyone, you could easily find yourself over spending. Losing track of how much you spent is not only a sign of overspending, it's very dangerous. You can find yourself spending money that is supposed to go in other places.
You are in lots of debt. If you are already in lots of debt this is a sign that you are overspending for the holiday. Having large amounts of debt is a sign that you are buying things you don't need and can't afford. If you find yourself in lots of debt, re-evaluate your spending.
You make lots of purchases using credit. The use of credit cards increases tremendously during the holiday season. When used in moderation, credit cards can be an ok thing. However it is very easy to find yourself buying much more with a credit card. It doesn't have the 'sting' that you feel when using cash. Be careful to avoid making lots of purchases with your credit card.
You continue buying things, when you already have what you need. So many people have completed their shopping yet they continue to go out and look for more gifts. This is a sure fire way to over spend. Make a list. When you have completed your shopping, stop! Find something else to occupy your extra time during the holiday season.
Learning not to spend too much during the holidays is tough. You need to start by having a Christmas budget. Before you buy anyone a gift, plan any parties, or buy in decorations, you need to sit down and write down everything you will need to purchase. Decide how much you are willing to spend during this time of year. Be in agreement with your spouse about this amount. Then, most importantly, stick to this amount. When your finished shopping, stay out of the stores. This is the only way you will avoid spending too much on Christmas.
