I like the idea of using family photos in this Christmas lights craft, because family is Christmas!
To Make These Christmas Lights For You Fireplace Mantel You Will Need:
Glass blocks
Photos of the family
Double sides tape
Power drill
Diamond drill bit
Strings of Christmas slights
Ribbons
The first thing you need to do is drill a hole in the side of each block. These are glass, so you will need a diamond drill bit. This type of drill bit can be used for so many crafts, which makes it a great investment for many DIYers.
Now, once the wholes have been drilled you are ready to start embellishing the glass blocks. I like to use family photos for this. You can use any image you want though.
Take your family photos to the local Kinko's. Have them photo copy the photos onto a thin paper, like a vellum. Acetate is also a great idea.
Tip: Try using letters to spell out "Merry Christmas" and use them on your fireplace mantel!
Now, once your image has been printed you can use one glass block to trace out the shape on the paper. Lay the block down, center it on the family photo, and then trace around it.
Now, cut the image out. You can use four dots of hot glue, one in each corner, and press the photos onto the front of the glass block. You can also use double sided tape. Both are easy to remove, so you can change out the photos as needed.
Now, here is another tip: Try trimming the edges of the photos so that they fit about ½ inch in around the glass block, so the edges of the glass block really frame the family photos.
Take your string of Christmas slights and insert them in through the hole you drilled on the side. One string can be used to light many blocks with light.
Now, you can build a stacked wall of the lit glass blocks on the Christmas fireplace or make a single row of them.
Add a bow on top of each to dress them up!
These simple lit Christmas slights also make great decorations for the bathroom at Christmas. You may want to use an image besides a family photo though!
