Christmas Marriage Proposal Ideas: Ways to Get Engaged

Five Ways to Propose to the One You Love

Cindy Lynn
A Christmas marriage proposal can be the highlight of the Christmas season and to that end, here are five Christmas engagement ideas. For simplicity's sake, let's assume the guy is doing the proposing, but these work just as well if it's a gal popping the question.

Christmas Proposal Ideas-Gift Inside a Gift: Find four boxes that range in size from larger to smaller, and that will fit inside each other. Lightly number them in pencil, with the larger being number one, and the smallest being number four.

The engagement ring should be in a small jewelry box. Place it into box 4 (the smallest box) and pad it well with Christmas tissue paper. Next, wrap box 4 and attach a tag that says, "Let wedding bells ring forever." Put box 4 inside box 3. Wrap box 3 and attach an inexpensive jingle bell/Christmas ring, along with a tag that says, "Let Christmas bells ring three times." Then put it inside box 2. Wrap box 2, attach jingle bell ring and tag that says, "Let Christmas bells ring twice." Place it in box 1. Wrap box 1, attaching a jingle bell ring and a tag that says, "Let Christmas bells ring once."

If you think your love is expecting a ring for Christmas and you'd like it to be a surprise, save the gift until Christmas evening, so that she thinks she's opened all the gifts from you. Tell her you forgot to give her one present and hand her the gift. Kneel and pop the question when she opens the box with the engagement ring.

Christmas Proposal Ideas-Visit from Santa: Invite your loved one to your house for a romantic dinner. Arrange to have Santa come by during dessert. He should invite your girlfriend to sit on his lap so he can visit with her. Santa should be coached ahead of time to ask, "Have you been a good girl?" After she says yes, then Santa can ask, "And would you like an engagement ring for Christmas?" When she says yes, you can kneel before her and ask her to marry you.

If you're absolutely, positively certain she's going to say yes, and you know she'd like a public proposal, you can do this at a restaurant, family Christmas party or church Christmas party. (Although, be warned ... you're going to feel awfully embarrassed if she says no in front of a group.)

Christmas Proposal Ideas-Bales of Hay: This takes some time to put together and is more expensive, but it's a unique Christmas proposal for those who live in rural areas and have access to bales of straw or hay. Arrange the bales in a large, open field or meadow so they spell out the words, "Marry me." Spray paint the tops of the bales bright red, so they're easily visible from the air. Arrange for a hot air balloon ride for the two of you, and for the balloon operator to take you over the field with the bales. Have the ring tied with ribbon that's wrapped around a miniature bale of hay (available in craft stores) or a hay cube, and give it to her when she says yes.

The hot air balloon might be a little too chilly if you live in a colder climate, and in that case, you can arrange to take her up in a small airplane.

Christmas Proposal Ideas-Photo Slide Show: Using a computer graphics program (Photo Studio, Adobe Photoshop, Gimp, etc.), create a jpeg image in Christmas colors and with the words, "Will you marry me?" If you don't have a graphics program, you can print the words on colored Christmas paper and take a photo of it. Also, take a photo of the ring.

Gather together digital photos of the two of you together. In addition, include your own shots of winter scenes, Christmas decorations, Christmas trees, etc. Upload the photos, as well as the one of the proposal and the ring, to a photo website. I recommend Shutterfly.com, but you can also use Snapfish, Kodak or any other site you like. Arrange the photos in a slide show, with the Christmas pictures interspersed between the pictures of the two of you. The last two photos in the slide show should include the proposal and the shot of the engagement ring.

Invite her over for a romantic dinner and then have her view the slide show on the computer.

Christmas Proposal Ideas-Jigsaw Puzzle: Buy a Christmas jigsaw puzzle, preferably one with a scene that's not too cluttered or busy, as well as not too many pieces. Put it together by yourself. Use an indelible marker to write the words, "Marry me" on the puzzle. Take it apart, mix up the pieces and put them back in the box. Invite your loved one over for an evening of snacks and games, making sure to leave plenty of time to finish the puzzle. Have the ring handy so that when she realizes what the puzzle says, you can propose on one knee. If she's the type who would like to have her family present, and you're absolutely certain she'll say yes, let the family in on it. Just make sure they're capable of keeping a secret, so no one ruins the surprise.

There you have it ... five ways to get engaged. If you follow one of these suggestions, you're sure to have a marriage proposal that's creative and fun. In addition, you'll experience the enjoyment and excitement that comes from a Christmas engagement to the one you love.
