Christmas Party Theme Ideas for Those of Any Age

Lauren Romano
Having a Christmas party can be one of the best parts of the season, however, instead of going the traditional route, consider throwing one with a theme. It may take a little more work to put together, but it can result in even more fun. Many of the Christmas party theme ideas are appropriate for adults as well as kids and are sure to have your guests thoroughly in the Christmas spirit.

International Christmas Party

Print an invitation from the computer that has "Merry Christmas" written all across the front in different languages. Serve a different traditional Christmas food from as many countries as possible. To make the process easier, shop at an international market or even a website that offers international goods, such as efooddepot.com. For decorations, print out cutouts of various countries and on each one write the name of the country, the name of the Santa Claus figure and if possible, attach a printout of some customs of the country. One great place to find this information is santas.net.

Snowy Christmas Party

For your snowy theme Christmas party, put up a Christmas tree sprayed with artificial snow and your usual decorations. Place piles of cotton at the bottom of windows and spray the glass with snow spray specifically for windows. Spray large Christmas greenery boughs with fake snow and put them over doorways, wrapped around banisters and anywhere there is enough room without them looking bunched. Spray some large sticks as well and put them in vases around the party area.

Ugly Christmas Sweater Party

Unless you've recently sorted through and gotten rid of a bunch of clothing, chances are you have a very ugly Christmas sweater. Most likely, your potential guests have one or two themselves. Give everyone a chance to dust off their sweaters and wear them out in public to your ugly sweater theme party. Not much décor is needed as the ugly sweaters will be decoration enough. In case you are a fan of ugly Christmas sweaters and really, who isn't, there is a Facebook group full of fans that love them as much as you.

Candy Cane Party

For your candy cane theme party, put up red and white garland anywhere that you can possibly fit it. Hang up large inflatable candy canes and, if possible, change out your linens with those that are red and white. Hang up red or white curtains, put slip covers on furniture and cover tables with tablecloths. Hang strings of white lights all around the room as well. Put out small vases or even glasses all around the room and fill them with candy canes. Considering they come in a variety of flavors, you can either have traditional peppermint to match the décor or add splashes of color by putting out different flavors, such as blueberry, strawberry and lemon. For the invitation, skip the extra cost of mailing a small or large candy cane with the invite and instead, print out red and white invitations and adhere on some information about the history of the candy cane, which you can find on starstuffs.com.

Costume Party

There are a huge amount of Christmas costumes including Christmas trees, gifts, Mrs. Claus, an elf or just wrap yourself up in a bow (kidding!). Throw a costume theme Christmas party where everyone wears their best Christmas costume. If you would rather not buy, consider renting the costume if there is a local costume shop in your area. If you're tight on money or just feel really creative, consider trying one of the fantastic ideas found on coolest-homemade-costumes.com.

Pink Christmas Party

I wouldn't recommend this if there are men in attendance, but a pink theme Christmas party can be a great idea for a get-together of girls of any age. Get a pink Christmas tree (even a small one to use in addition to your regular one). Put up strings of pink Christmas lights and hang pink garland. Cover tables with silver or gold tablecloths and hang pink and gold or silver round Christmas ornaments from streamers strung across the ceiling. You can also request that guests wear outfits that match with the décor.

While these aren't traditionally the décor or outfits one would find at a Christmas party, that can be the fun of it. Something different can add a holiday spark to doing the same routine year after year. Make sure you give your guests enough notice for the Christmas theme party, especially if they are going to need to get a special outfit.
