Christmas Poem - A Ghazal for Christmas

J L Carey Jr
Jesus would be... very happy with this Christmas,

I see him stretching his arms around this Christmas.

There is something loving in the poorness of it,

Something far more embracing about this Christmas.

The morning tree's iridescent lights glimmer more

With fewer distractions beneath it this Christmas.

Jolly Saint Nick and his red bucket seem fuller,

Even old Bing Crosby sounds better this Christmas.

The snow gleams whiter, like the snow of my childhood

J. C. -It descends like doves... feathers this Christmas.

The ghazal became widely used around 1000 A.D. typically dealing with love or loss in a melancoly tone. Often the poet will make a reference to their own name in the final line as well.

Catching a bit of your backlist today. Beautiful piece here. I looked at this form but haven't attempted it yet. Feeling a bit lazy about form lately.

Spot on! You have captured, so well, what I have been considering about Christmas 2008! The opportunity for simplicity is so pervasive this year. I do fear, though, for those who know nothing of Christmas but extravegance. Beautiful poem, elegantly simple and true.
