Christmas: How to Save Money on Christmas Wrapping Paper

Todd Pheifer
Buying Christmas gifts can be bad enough without adding in all the extras such as wrapping paper, bows, and ribbon. In a tough economy people have to look for all sorts of different ways to save money. While cutting costs on wrapping paper may not seem very significant, every little bit helps. For some people, a bit of the joy of presents is found in ripping off that paper, so it is hard for some people to imagine the complete removal of that tradition. However, there are some ways to cut the costs so that wrapping paper does not put the budget into a dangerous area. Here are a few techniques for saving money on Christmas wrapping paper.

The funny papers

It may not seem very classy but some people save money on wrapping paper by wrapping presents in the Sunday comics. Granted, less people are getting a newspaper today but if people plan ahead they may be able to grab a few weeks of comics from an obliging relative or friend. The comics may not say Merry Christmas or something else that reflects a holiday scene, but the opportunity to rip off paper is still intact.

Reuse what you have

Sometimes money can be saved on wrapping paper by reusing pieces of it for future guests. This technique is usually employed by using a little self-discipline. When one opens a gift they can open a carefully and set the paper aside rather than ripping it to shreds. Of course, this may be difficult to legislate in a room full of people, as some people really enjoy the opening process and might feel a bit awkward if someone told them to open their gift with a great deal of care.

Gift bags

More and more people are giving gifts in a gift bag that has been stuffed with a bit of tissue paper rather than wrapping the presents in traditional wrapping paper. Perhaps this is because society is a bit lazier, or maybe it is just a trend in gift giving. In either case, gift bags can easily be reused. Since there is typically no ripping and shredding involved, the receiver simply has to remove the gift and carefully set the bag aside. Granted, they may not want to avoid reusing that bag for the person who just gave it to them.

Shopping around

Finally, saving money on Christmas paper may be best accomplished by shopping at the right time. In many situations, stores will have deep discounts and sales immediately following the Christmas season. The reality of life is that most people shop for paper before Christmas. This makes intuitive sense, but it is not always the most cost effective way to acquire paper. Since stores want to get rid of their inventory after Christmas, it may be wise to stock up after the season on discounted paper and then save it for the following year. If people are smart shoppers and do their best to avoid the cost altogether, they may be able to save money on wrapping paper and have more money to spend on the actual gifts.
