Keeping Your Christmas Shopping Organized to Save Time and Money

Making a Christmas shopping checklist is sure to help you get through your holiday shopping in good form. Not only does a checklist help keep important items from being forgotten, but it also helps cut down on the stress and strife that comes with being unorganized during such a busy season. Here are five tips for getting those Christmas tasks organized.

Breaking Christmas Shopping into a Few Main Headings

Christmas comes with several different broad headings that need organization. Separate each broad heading into its own smaller list. Make a checklist for presents for immediate family needs, presents for secondary people (such as coworkers), food preparation shopping for Christmas dinner, and, if applicable, make a checklist detailing any shopping responsibilities you have for an office party or family get together. These separate lists will ensure as much an organization as possible.

Organize a Food Shopping List Well in Advance

If you are preparing your own Christmas dinner then consider planning your menu immediately after Thanksgiving and doing your shopping in waves. By creating this list earlier and checking off a few articles a week, you are saving a huge grocery bill from occurring all at once as well as ensuring nothing is forgotten in a mad rush to get everything off of a massive list.

Separate a Present Shopping List by Gifts not Child

If you have multiple children and will be purchasing numerous gifts for each child, separate your shopping list by presents, not by child. Organize each group of gifts by cost. The pricier gifts are at the bottom and the novelty items are towards the top. Start out purchasing the novelty type items, one for each child at a time, several weeks before the holidays arrive. Compartmentalizing these purchases through judicious Christmas checklist organization can help prevent a credit crunch as the big day nears.

Separate Your List into Must-Haves and Maybes

If your child has been wanting a Wii for a long time and has only recently developed an interest in a skateboard, then give the Wii a much higher priority on your shopping list. By separating the list into must-haves and alternate ideas, you are able to focus on one primary goal and then move into alternates as the need presents itself.

Make a List of Non-Priority Gifts

A lot of people get bogged down at Christmastime by a sense of unnecessary obligation. Your third-cousins ex-wife does not require a unique Christmas present and a card for the holiday unless she is a close friend. Take a piece of paper and jot down the gifts that you are only mildly interested in shopping for this holiday season, and then only buy them if you find that you have the extra time, money, and desire.

Put your family first this holiday season and save as much time for them as possible. Those are the moments you will remember and cherish.
