Christmas Shopping with Children

Cathy Pelekakis
We all take for granted that we can always keep an eye on our children. There are however times when for just that instant your child wanders away from your side. Practice these tips with your youngsters before you even leave the house so that they are well aware of what to do if they become parted from you.

Tell your Child the following Security and Safety Tips:

If they are in a public place and get separated from their parents, don't walk around looking for them. Quickly go to the nearest checkout counter, store clerk or security officer and tell them you need help finding your parents.

Do not get into a car or go anywhere with any person unless your parents have told you it is okay.

No one should be asking you for directions, to look for a "lost puppy," or telling you your mother or father is in trouble and they will take you to them. If someone tries to take you somewhere, quickly get away from them and yell or scream, "This person is trying to take
me away" or "This person is not my father or mother."

Going to the mall on your own, that's okay just use the "buddy system" and never go places alone.

Always ask your parents' permission to leave the yard, play area or to go into someone's home.

Never hitchhike or try to get a ride home with anyone unless your parents have told you it is okay. No parent in their right mind is going to tell you to hitchhike so just don't do it to save bus fare.

Give your child a cell phone, make sure emergency numbers are listed, it's charged and with them.

Have a safe Holiday

I think it might be easier to leave the kids at home, if you can. Plus, you can shop for them.

I have a better idea -- don't take the kids with you!
