Christmas Shopping when Stores Are Going Out of Business

Christmas is the season for spending time with loved ones. However, as we all know, it is also a time for the giving and receiving of gifts. Careful consideration should be given when purchasing gifts this year as businesses around the country are closing their doors. From Linen's & Things to Home Depot, many retailers are closing down all or at least some of their stores. With major and minor retailers alike hanging signs that pronounce "Store Closing Events" this can be a major draw to consumers who are looking for a bargain.

Although the positive is that sales can stretch your budget, it is important to keep in mind several factors when it comes to making purchases at retailers that are going out of business.

Beware of Giving Gift Cards.

Gift cards are a great way to shop, especially for shoppers who are limited on time. Buying a gift card is also great for those picky people on your list who never seem to be satisfied with any gift that they are given. By purchasing a gift card they have the ability to pick out what they like therefore relieving you of the worry.

The caution however comes in knowing what stores are safe to purchase gift cards. If buying a gift card from a store that is closing, ask what their policy will be regarding these cards. Are they redeemable at a sister store? Is there a limited time frame in which the consumer has to redeem the card? You'll want to do some research as to what stores are going out of business in the next year even if there are no signs to that effect. The harsh reality is that in 2009 more of our favorite stores will likely be going out of business. You don't want the receiver of your gift to have the gift that doesn't give.

Returns.

Be sure that what you're buying is actually something that is wanted. Always find out whether or not exchanges and returns will be given. Ask at the time of purchase if all sales are final.

Double check your Discounts

This holds true for any store whether they are closing their doors or not. Be sure to watch the register as your items are rung up. If the sign says 50% off and the register says 30% let the cashier know. These missed discounts can cost you in savings.

With a little caution and a few questions asked, it is possible to take advantage of store closing events without being burned.
