One of the first Christmas songs, that I remember listening to as a child, was the Jackson 5's rendition of 'Santa Claus is Coming to Town.' The adorable Michael put a funky twist to the song and had all the children dancing.
And who can resist those mischievous chipmunks, Simon and Theodore along with the ring leader Alvin singing 'The Christmas Song' as David directs and tries in vain to keep Alvin in line. ALVIN!!!
I love the energy of the battle of song between
'White Christmas' and 'Green Christmas' in the Snow Miser/Heat Miser song from 'The Year Without a Santa Clause' as they try to maintain control over the Christmas winter weather.
As I grew up, of course my taste did as well. Sometimes we all want to just cuddle up with a loved one or a warm blanket. And these songs set the scene:
You will definitely have a very special Christmas when you put on Donny Hathaway's 'This Christmas.' His smooth sexy voice just makes me want to hug someone and not let go.
When I listen to the soulful and romantic Boyz to Men song, 'Let It Snow,' I imagine laying in front of a lovely fireplace. It is a beautiful and cozy song for young and mature lovers alike.
Then Mariah Carey says it all in 'All I Want For Christmas is You.'
Not forgetting the reason for the season is so important to me. There are quite a few songs that celebrate the birth of our King and Savior. The ones that I love the most are as follows:
Whitney Houston undeniably takes 'Joy to the World' and gives this song of worship of our Savior's coming a new life. I love to hear it with the choir backing up her rich voice.
'Carol of the Bells,' also know as, 'Ring Christmas Bells' is simply beautiful whether presented in song or instrumental. But, you really experience the bells when the Trans Siberian Orchestra puts together their rendition with a fantastic light show.
'What Child is This?' is the eternal question and men will forever seek after and find the true Savior of the world, Christ the King. I love most any vocal or instrumental of this song.
My all time favorite Christmas song is 'Do You Hear What I Hear.' I particularly love to hear choirs sing it and echo to one another. But, again, the most moving and beautiful version of this song was given by Whitney Houston. It brings tears to my eyes and warms my heart.
If any of these songs are unfamiliar to you, just hop over to Youtube and listen to these old and new classics. Have yourself a very Merry Christmas.
