Spending time with children at this time of year can give back to you more precious gifts than you can ever give away. Enlightening a child's world with the treasures of art and theatre can be an experience that only their smiles and their twinkling eyes can come near measuring the value of.
Near my rural southern Indiana home, there are not a vast amount of theatrical presentations. However, there are many within a few hours drive that are well worth the time spent to give such a wondrous gift to a child's memories.
The Children's Theatre of Cincinnati December 1 -22, 2008
A short 2 ½ hour drive can bring you to the Art Reach presentation of the classic A Christmas Carol. The children's experience enhanced through a supportive study guide which simplifies the experience of Ebenezar Scrooge so it can be easily understood. The children will easily take away the moral of the story because of the visits by Scrooge's former business partner, Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Future. Seeing how his meanness has affected others, yet they are still happy. He also sees how unhappy he has become and how sad his life is yet to be. These enlightenments lead to a changed Scrooge who becomes a happy and more giving, sharing person.
The Children's Theatre study guide helps the students of all ages to learn about vocabulary, settings, recall and gives ideas for further learning such as chart drawing and letter writing. The guide gives coloring opportunities, encourages ideas for giving and helps the children think about the purpose of the gifts, not just the gifts. Grammar is encouraged by the use of adjectives describing Scrooge and correct form and structure of sentence writing as well as capitalization and spelling.
The study guide encourages the children's creativity and thinking outside the box. They are encouraged through leading questions to design what if scenarios of what Scrooge would do after his experience. Finally, through a question and answer session the students are asked to recall Scrooge's experiences and then to analyze the importance of the experience.
This delightful experience not only allows the children to enjoy a treasured classic, but also stimulates structured learning and creativity and the reinforcement of morally favorable behaviors.
The price ranging from $7 to $20 is money well spent on an enjoyable, memorable, and valuable learning experience.
