Have you ever been to a mall in the early morning hours of Saturday morning during the month of December Christmas time shopping?
If so, then you most likely have encountered some of your favorite malls most routine employees - the Mall Walkers. Mall walkers are typically individuals who are looking for the perfect match between cardiovascular activity, social environment combined with cost-effectiveness.
At Christmas time, the malls are typically congested with impulsive buyers in a rush. Add to the increased volume of shoppers coupled with "mall walkers" and a collision is likely to happen at your next corner.
First, the benefits of being a mall walker are:
1. These individuals can stay inside a climate controlled mall, dress comfortably and not worry about the wind, rain, snow, ice, heat.
2. They also have no intersections to cross, or obstructions to the path.
3. They are always going to have mall security on duty which protect them from the unknown.
Secondly, besides these advantages, many malls actively encourage walkers with walking clubs, discounts, health checkups, and mileage rewards. Often the walking club or program is sponsored by local medical center.
Today, I went to the mall at 9am to beat the rush of shoppers on the first Saturday shopping post Black Friday. I turned the corner after one half of one lap and felt out of place. Yes, I browsed the shops while trying to walk 2 mph. However, I wasn't dressed in red and green color workout gear that help symbolize the season. Additionally, I did not feel like sweating in a public venue. I passed the Salvation Army volunteer ringing the bell for donations during this process. It made me think that I had one lap to go before the end of the race.
I understand the benefits of going to the mall at Christmas time to shop and to get exercise. Especially as part of the whole multi-task structure of my generation.
In conclusion, as I laughed at myself for doing this trial run, I learned that during down economic times, these individuals certainly know how to cut expense and stay lean. Although, I don't feel the comfort level as some people in this environment for that activity, I sure understand the theory.
Therefore, Mr. Mall Walker, I salute you as a typical Christmas shopper. I will wave to you on your next lap as I sit down at the mall Starbucks and observe your determination. I wish you well. After January 1, the next holiday, you will soon have their venue back - as I am only the visitor.
