Christmas Traveling Tips

Traveling for the holidays can be one of the most stressful things to do. What do you pack, where do you find cheap airfare, how do you stay safe? Here are some helpful tips to get you through the holiday season with ease.

Shop Early For Airfare

Airfare can be a tricky thing. When do you get the best deals? I've heard all sorts of tips, like shop on a Wednesday at precisely 11:56 am to find the cheapest airfare. The truth is, there isn't a magical date when plane tickets are going to be cheaper than others. Especially during the holidays. But you can reduce costs by shopping early, and sometimes, early in the week will have better deals. Sometimes. Airliners will jack up rates as the holidays draw closer, so you want to shop early.

Try To Stay For A Saturday

This will reduce airfare if you stay over a weekend. If you can fly back on a day that doesn't fall on a weekend, this will reduce your costs significantly.

Shop Around

Don't just look at one site to find cheap airfare. Sometimes sites will have better deals when you book with a hotel, or some other deal. Sometimes the airliners' direct website will have the cheapest fare. The point is, check around before you purchase your ticket.

Pack Lightly

If you are traveling around the holidays, you are going to want to pack lightly if you are flying. It's a busy time of year, so lots of people will be carrying lots of luggage. And with airliners tacking on fees for pretty much everything, you don't want to get stuck paying if your luggage is overweight or if it has to be checked because of crowded airplanes.

Don't Wrap Presents If You Are Flying

This is a tip that a number of people I know have learned the hard way. Sometimes, if airport security cannot see through the wrapping paper, they will unwrap your present. Since you might end of re-wrapping it anyway, you might as well wait until you get to where you are going before you gift wrap your presents.

Pay Attention To Airport Rules

Not only is this tip for your safety, but for your convenience too. During the holidays we all have a lot of extra stuff in the form of presents that we wouldn't normally be carrying around. Just keep in mind that some things you still can't take on a plane, such as a lot of liquid. You probably won't get this through security, so before you decide to bring a bottle of wine, check the rules so you don't end up having to throw away an expensive bottle. And, as I found out on one of my last trips, peanut butter is considered a liquid in some airports.

Watch Hotel Rates

A lot of hotels will raise rates for the holiday season, so, just like airfare, you are going to want to watch for deals and ways to reduce costs. It's beneficial if you book early. A lot of hotels do not charge a cancellation fee, so if you think you are going to be traveling, book your hotel early.

Prepare For Weather

You never know what can happen weather-wise, especially if you live where it can get cold. If you are driving or flying, make sure to check the weather before you head out. Weather can ruin anyone's holiday if you aren't paying attention to it.

Let People Know Where You Are Going

This is especially important if you are driving. Let people know where you are going and when you plan on arriving. This way, if something does happen, someone will now your approximate location.

Pack Appropriately For Road Trips

You never know when something can happen, especially on long drives during the winter. You will want to make sure you have all the appropriate equipment available, such as a shovel, food and water.
