Christmas Tree Farms in Lincoln, Nebraska

J. K. Baurain
Going out to cut a fresh Christmas tree I expected to take half a day to travel outside the city. Yet I was pleased to discover that right inside the city limits of Lincoln, three farms of growing holiday evergreens await. Now when I go to make Christmas memories with my family and bring home a fresh tree, I can save time and fuel, yet still bring home a fragrant, freshly-cut tree. Most Christmas tree farms are seasonal operations that begin Thanksgiving weekend. Calling ahead to make sure the farm is up and running is an essential step before we load ourselves into the car, along with our cameras and high hopes of memorable tree experience. In the city of Lincoln, Nebraska there are three conveniently located Christmas tree farms:

Pineland Tree Farm
1486 W. Alvo Rd., Lincoln 68531
Phone: (402) 470-3121

Prior Pines
1700 N. 98th Street, Lincoln 68505
Phone: (402) 202-3827

Spilkers Pineridge Tree Farm
1201 Fletcher Ave., Lincoln 68521
Phone: (402) 477-0387 or (402) 430-0706

Spilkers Pineridge Tree Farm offers two "pre-tag" weekends in October where customers can enjoy free refreshments and wagon rides when selecting and reserving a holiday tree ahead of time. One advantage to this earlier opportunity is that the weather is likely to be milder and more enjoyable, and the selection will be greater than later in the season.

Outside the city limits there are many other tree farms in Lancaster county and beyond. While there are 30 Christmas tree growers listed on the Nebraska Department of Agriculture's directory, the most complete information can be found at PickYourOwnChristmasTree.org. The fresh Christmas tree picking experience will be more likely to succeed if one researches the tree farm before trying to visit the place. Since development and changing times may have taken the farm off the map, locating the possible destination via satellite with Google Maps is helpful, in addition to calling ahead. At least one of the farms listed on the directories above, Walnut Grove Tree Farm, appears to be no longer operational, having been overtaken by urban sprawl to become a housing development. But that spurs me to visit the remaining Christmas tree farms, where we can tap into a rich holiday custom and create family memories for years to come.
