Christmas Tree Farms Near New York City

Lindsay Woodland
Christmas Tree Farms Near New York City - Anyone who's ever been to New York City in the winter has seen how we buy our trees - from random vendors on street corners in Manhattan. However, unbeknownst to many New Yorkers, there is an alternative. Here are 10 Christmas tree farms that are all within a short drive from New York City.

Bronx
Egan Acres Tree Farm
One of the only Christmas tree farms in the five boroughs, Egan Acres Tree Farm in Riverdale, Bronx offers precut Christmas trees, rooted Christmas trees and wreaths, plus enormous trees for outdoor decoration. 314 West 231st Street, Riverdale, New York 10463. Phone 914-804-8981.

Upstate New York/Connecticut
The area north of NYC, including the Hudson River Valley and southern Connecticut, has a plethora of Christmas tree farms to choose from. Most of these are about a 1.5 hour drive from the city, through some of the most scenic country New York has to offer.

Solvang Tree Farm
At Solvang Tree Farm, every tree is $40, no matter what the size - a steal if you have space for a big tree. They offer U-Cut and precut Christmas trees, living Christmas trees, Christmas wreaths, Christmas boughs and garlands. They'll tie and/or bale the tree for you, too! 80 Bedell Road, Poughkeepsie, New York 12603. Phone 845-473-0224. Hours: November 28th through Christmas, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 9:00 - 4:30.

Hours: weekends only, 9am until dark from Thanksgiving until Christmas.

Bilmar Nurseries
Bilmar Nurseries actually has three different farms to choose from. At their satellite farms, Fabulous Firs and Sonny Sky, they offer only U-Cut Christmas trees, but at the main location, they have U-Cut trees, precut Christmas trees, wreaths, boughs, garlands, mistletoe, Christmas decorations, winter hay rides, gift shop, crafts, snacks and refreshment stand. That's a whole day's worth of entertainment for the price of a tree. 26 Bilmar Blvd, Pleasant Valley, New York 12569. Phone: 845-635-3206. Open 7 days from November 23rd through December 24th.

H. Smith Richardson Tree Farm
Offering both precut and U-Cut Christmas trees, the H. Smith Richardson Tree Farm in Westport CT is open 6 days a week from November 29th through Christmas (closed Mondays). They sell firewood, too, in case you're one of those rare lucky New Yorkers with a working fireplace! Sasco Creek Rd., Westport, CT. Phone 203-623-0646.

New Jersey
Getting to New Jersey can be a bit difficult for those who live on the east side of NYC, but for westsiders, here are some great options for buying a Christmas tree in New Jersey.

Hidden Pond Tree Farm
At Hidden Pond Tree Farm, you can cut your own, choose your own and have them cut it, or simply choose from their selection of precut Christmas trees. They also offer living Christmas trees, Christmas wreaths, free tree trimmings, free hay rides and free hot chocolate. West Field Road, Mendham, NJ 07945. Phone 973-865-6362.

Wightman's Farms
You can do all of your Christmas shopping at Wightman's Farms- not only do they have fresh-cut Christmas trees, wreaths and decorations, but they also offer a wide variety of farm fresh produce, flowers, apple cider, cheeses, Hickory Smoked Hams, and homemade pies, donuts, muffins, cookies and brownies. Route 202, 1111 Mt. Kemble Ave., Morristown, NJ. Phone 973-425-9819; Hotline 973-425-0840.

Manhattan
Billy's Christmas Tree Farm
My final Christmas tree farm recommendation isn't really a farm at all, but it's still a great place to go for a Christmas tree in Manhattan. Billy's Christmas Tree Farm has been selling trees on Jane St. for more than 20 years. Billy himself comes down from Vermont for a month each winter to bring a little bit of Christmas to New York. He even wrote a book about his Christmas tree expertise! Billy's may not be a traditional farm, but it sure beats buying a tree from an anonymous street vendor!

Great article Lindsay! New York is another one of those areas you might not think to find tree farms.

We broke down several years ago and went artificial because we both got too old and creaky to be traisping through tree farms in inclement weather, but I really do miss cutting my own tree!

Great job on this! I'm no where near NY, but this is a great list!

Is it really time to be thinking about Christmas trees? The days and months just fly by these days.
