It is highly recommended that you take advantage of the Houston Christmas tree recycling program to support our city. Not only does it save the city on landfill fees, but the trees are used to create mulch for the city landscaping projects. If you donate your tree, you will receive a free tree seedling.
Don't forget to clear off all of your ornaments and tinsel and other decorations before you drop off your Christmas tree. The city of Houston actually provides locations all over Houston, totaling fourteen recycling centers in all. As a large city, we need lots of locations. The best way to find out which area is nearest to you is to go to www.houstonsolidwaste.org or call 311. Generally these programs are open for a week or so into January and are open seven days a week for convenience.
The Houston Christmas tree recycling program has been doing this for 18 years and has saved more than a quarter of a million dollars and recycled over 22 million pounds of Christmas trees (www.click2houston.com/news/18390262/detail.html).
