Christmas will soon be here. For most of us, the first thing we think about when we think of Christmas - is the Christmas tree. If you are one of those people, then you also know just how challenging it can be sometimes to come up with ideas to decorate it. Are you looking to do something different with your family Christmas tree this year? There are so many ideas that you can try. Here are some ideas to inspire you and get you thinking about what would work best for your family room.

Why not select holiday colors? A popular idea is to do a Christmas tree using only two or even three colors, such as red, green and white. Or even a more elegant combination like ivory and gold. Colors can get you to thinking creatively and you can select ornaments with only those colors. Consider selecting your favorite colors to let your personality really show. Or select colors that will compliment and flatter your decorating scheme. This type of tree with really stand out.

What about a vintage ornament tree? A great Christmas tree is one that is a real classic. A tree that shows off ornaments that have been in the family for generations. But what if you don't have ornaments from years gone by? Stores like Restoration Hardware have made versions of classic 1950's ornaments that you can check out. Another great idea is to look for ornaments at online auctions. Don't forget touches like old fashioned silver tinsel and a tree skirt.

How about an angel tree? Or a Santa tree? A Christmas tree can be covered with one type of ornament and look just beautiful. You can get many different types of ornaments with the same theme, so find many different types of angels, or Santa Clauses or whatever ornament appeals to you. Consider carrying this theme over into your decorating as well. Just have fun with it.

On that note....what about a flamingo tree? Or a cat tree? You could always create a Christmas tree with Christmas ornaments that have a non-Christmas theme. If your favorite bird is the flamingo, everyone would totally understand when they saw your Christmas tree entirely covered in flamingos. Doing a theme tree like this can also encourage people in your life to give you this type of ornament as a gift - because they know that you are going to want this for your tree for Christmastime!

You can also do a hobby tree. There are ornaments for just about everything you can think of. There are ornaments for ballroom dancing and also for gardening just as examples. You could create a tree dedicated to your favorite hobby. A gardening tree could be very creative, with ornaments about gardening, but also flower ornaments and vegetable and fruit ornaments. A ballroom dancer tree could be unique with dancer ornaments and ornaments of dancing shoes.

What about doing a crafty tree? If you are the creative type, then this is the tree for you! You could make all of your Christmas ornaments! This could be a fun project for the entire family and you could wind up with a wide variety of ornaments. This is the type of thing your family could be involved with every year. There are so many ornament projects for different types of crafters - you could do just about any type of craft as an ornament.
