Chrno Crusade - a Religious Anime!?!?

Chrno Crusade is a recent addition to the anime genre, which is a nice mix of the generic style of anime, with a new twist. Similar to how Tezuka used Buddhism and created his manga Budda. Chrno Crusade is an anime which relies on Christian themes. However, paralleling Budda in many ways, the story is quite entertaining and not meant to preach.

This approach to a religion in an anime was successful in Tezuka's Budda, and it works just as well in Chrno Crusade.

A brief synopsis of Chrno Crusade is difficult to accomplish in a brief period of time as the story becomes quite complex as the series progresses. However, in essence the plot revolves around two characters, Rosette and Chrno. Based in the 1920's the two protagonists are exorcists for the Magdalan church. Rosette is a sister in the church who often encounters demons, and other strange beings.

Chrno her sidekick is also a demon, but who has changed his ways. The story behind their relationship is one that is unraveled slowly through the series. In general, the two characters are bound by a contract which allows Chrno to achieve his true demonic form at the cost of the life-source of Rosette.

Chrno first became trapped in this smaller form when his life was saved by Saint Magala, however this is not revealed until much later in the series. The duo encounters many enemies along their adventure, and the stories often consist of adventure, horror, and action.

Following the general trend of anime, Chrno Crusade is a gory, blood piece of work; however what makes this anime so appealing is that it also incorporates humor, romance, and several other themes into the story as well. This is what makes it such a well rounded tale which many people can enjoy. If you have not watched a good anime lately, it may be worth your while to get ahold of Chrno Crusade.
