Chronic Pain Treatment Strategies

Shawn Thomas
For many Americans, chronic pain is a severe problem. Chronic pain differs from acute pain, and chronic pain can last six months and for many more. It can easily last a lifetime and can disappear and come back. Acute pain is different and it goes away easily and does not last very long

Chronic pain can be elusive to patients. Doctors often have a tough time pinpointing the source of the problem and thus try to treat the pain. There are certain medicines that can help ease the effects of chronic pain. Many of these are sold over-the-counter whereas many need a prescription. It is common for doctors to use antidepressants and anticonvulsants to ease the effects of chronic pain.

Chronic pain relief is also mildly responsive to some forms of physical therapy. Physical therapy is the low impact exercises like swimming, walking, and stretching. Doing these low impact exercises regularly can help your body and lower the intensity of the pain that you are dealing with. Even so these exercises are most effective when performed in conjunction with a trained physical therapist

Another form of treatment is behavioral therapy and occupational therapy. In occupational therapy patients are taught how to pace themselves in doing everyday tasks. This can help ease the effects of recurring pain brought upon by specific tasks that the patient is performing on a regular basis. On the other hand behavioral therapy teaches the patient necessary and important relaxation techniques which can help with anxiety and stress.

In order to achieve relief from chronic pain lifestyle changes are essential. This means you need to pay particular attention to what you eat, sleeping patterns, and any other drugs you may take. It is also important to not smoke and to avoid alcohol. This is because when the body is not having problems with these lifestyle issues than the medications can be more effective than help ease the pain.

If you want to achieve total relief from chronic pain you may have a hard time doing so. However there are numerous things that you can do in order to help ease the effects of the pain and not have it be so severe. It is important to work with your doctor to have them be able to find a diagnosis if possible and discuss treatment options and treatment plans. Further it is important to notify them of any side effects medications can be causing, how painful your pain is, and how frequent the pain occurs.

There are many processes in development to aid in chronic pain. One such instance that recently emerged in is fMRI in conjunction with real-time data. This allows the patient to determine what parts of the brain are active and sensitive and be able to adjust accordingly with emotional responses. While the technology is still in development it is possible that one day it can greatly emerge to help those suffering. Another outlet for chronic pain patients can be alternative professional's that practice such things as acupuncture and chiropractic care.
