Chubby's Diner Review in Kansas City
Neighborhood: Westport
Kansas City, MO 66401
United States of America
Westport, Missouri is full of great night-life options such as bars, concert venues, theaters, and shops. But, where do you turn when you're hungry after a long night of dancing and drinking? Chubby's restaurant is your best option, it is a 24 hour 50's style diner located just a block away from central Westport, at 39th and Broadway. This is easily accessible from anywhere in Westport and has plenty of parking in their lot and on the street in front. More importantly, it's in walking distance from most of the bars in Westport.

The menu here features your classic diner favorites, such as hamburgers, malts, sandwiches, curly fries, and breakfast items. Most meals are about 7-8 dollars total, and the side items are cheap as well- usually about 2-3 dollars. I could go on and on about the delicious food here, but I'll stick to some of my absolute favorites to recommend. The biscuits and gravy are famous, and go perfectly with their fresh-brewed, bottomless cup coffee. You can order them in a range of portions, too, depending on how hungry you are. The orange malt is the best malt I've ever had, tasting like a sweet, orange cream candy. For just a couple bucks you get a large cup and metal, mixing container full of delicious malt than can be shared with a date or a couple friends. Of the sides, the grits and curly fries are not to be missed. Other staples offered are steak and eggs, omelets, corned beef sandwiches, and anything from their daily selection of pies.

While the food is excellent (especially to satisfy those midnight cravings and to sober you up), the thing that makes Chubby's truly unique is the atmosphere. The diner décor is cliché, featuring black and white tiles, Elvis posters, and a jukebox, but the staff and regular customers are an entertainment in themselves. Chubby's is a strange mixing ground of the local art institute students, people who work downtown, homeless people, drunks, and the police who stop in just as often to eat, it seems, as they do to make arrests. If you're there late enough, chances are you'll see some the strangest, funniest, and most interesting people you could imagine. During the daytime hours, the mix is only slightly affected by high school students shopping nearby and families stopping in for lunch. The staff here is also pretty eccentric, but are usually down to earth and low-key.

So, if you find yourself hungry in Westport, go on over to Chubby's for some great, cheap, American classics. You won't be disappointed.
