History of the Texas Rangers

The Texas Rangers are the oldest law enforcement body on the North American Continent and the Texas Ranger name is synonymous with integrity, courage and honor. It was in 1820 that Stephen F. Austin requested permission from the Mexican government for 300 families to enter the territory of Texas. Within three years, the need for law enforcement to protect the pioneers became apparent. On August 10, 1823, While Texas was still a part of Mexico; the Mexican government gave permission to Austin to employ ten men to protect the Texas frontier. The men ranged all over the Texas frontier to scout for movements of renegade Indians. By 1835, the number of the Texas Rangers had increased to 25 men and they protected the settlers from outlaws as well as Indians. Texas Rangers today fall under the jurisdiction of the Department of Public Safety and have as much authority as a county sheriff.

Alex Cahill, played by Sheree J. Wilson was the Assistant District Attorney and love interest of Walker, Texas Ranger. Also, Noble Willingham played Walker's closest friend, C.D. Parker who was a retired Texas Ranger ready to give advice and help Cordell Walker out on the tough cases.
