According to the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, Pastor Terry Jones said of the protest, "We feel, as Christians, one of our jobs is to warn... The goal of these and other protests are to give Muslims an opportunity to convert."
The Dove World Outreach Center posted the protest as a facebook event. In response, Jones stated, "people have been mailing Qur'ans to the church to burn."
The church's protest is sure to escalate ever growing tensions already facing Florida. Muslim's will be coming to the close of their holy month of Ramadan on September 11th. The last day of this month is a holiday called Eid al-Fitr or "Great Eid". After fasting for the holy month, Muslim's, celebrate by a day of festivities and breaking the fast. Many local Muslims plan to mark the day with a feast and share knowledge about Islamic traditions and give out Qur'ans to church members and the wider community.
Earlier this year, on May 10th, a pipe bomb exploded in the Islamic Center of Northwest Florida. Thankfully, no worshipper's were hurt in the incident. Communications director of Tampa Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Ramzy Kilic said, "We don't want to do anything that would be reactive". Kilic however is afraid that the burning of the Qur'an could escalate tensions in the area even further.
Before The Dove World Outreach Center protests planned on 9/11 take place with the burning of the Qur'an, the church will be protesting at Gainesville City Hall on August 2nd. They will be protesting the election of the city's openly gay mayor, Craig Lowe. The church has been blogging about the election and uploading youtube videos attacking Lowe and his bedroom choices. In one youtube video, Pastor William Sapp said, "Here in Gainesville, they're getting ready to have a runoff election between two candidates and one of them is openly a homo, gay, fag - whatever you want to call him, I don't care, Bottom line is we cannot afford a homo mayor."
Perhaps the church organizing these hateful events should take a look at their own holy book and read Leviticus 19:18: "Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself."

As a Christian, I am sorry that another 'christian' is once again completely missing who God is and what His Son Jesus taught us to be...and not to be. I am sorry but I could never worship or participate in a life of faith with someone who is doing this kind of thing. I hope and pray that God's wisdom will prevail. I hope that this congregation decides to follow God and not people who are mis-representing who God is.
Everyone should read the Koran. It is all there..
It is in the Koran 5:51
Just to clarify for my readers, I do not, never have and never will endorse or support the burning of any books.
and younger who have memorized the Qur'an. Allah has said that he will protect the Qur'an from people like you. Obviously you have never read one letter of the Qur'an so my advise to you is befor you burn it read it and make sure you don't burn the part where Allah say what means, "Oh you who believe, fear Allah (God) and die not exept in a state of submition". To my new Christian friends whom I'm sure I will get to meet through this blogg, Allah tells us in the Qur'an what means, closest to you in faith are those who call themselves Christian because they leave off worldly gain for the love of their lord.
As a Muslim Amarican it hurts me to see that in 2010 we are no father then we were 40 years ago. We hated black people for other reason then the color of thier skin, now we hate muslims for what they believe. To hate someone for the color of their skin is as silly as cutting off your nose to spite your own face, but above that, it is from Shaytan (Satin). Shaytan was the first racist ever. When Allah (God) comanded the angles to bow down to Adam Shaytan refused, stating that he was better then Adam because he was created from a smokeless fire and Adam was created was created from clay. When will we as Americans grow past such childs play. As for this burning of the Qur'an. If this is what you need to do to make you feel better then have at it, but allow me to bring you up to speed, if you burned every Qur'an in the world I promise you the Qur'an would still be here. As muslims we are commanded to memorize the qur'an and recite it in our prays. There are muslims as young as 10 years old
I think that whoever thought up that idea is a complete idiot. I'm sorry if I'm blunt, but as a christian myself I find it most appalling that people who call themselves christian and represent christianity will engage in a completely disrespectful, unchristian activity such as this. If you look at the life of Christ He never disrespected other people's religion; I don't see him smashing roman statues or burning other religious artifacts. Jesus loved people were they were at. One does NOT convert people by burning their sacred books and disrespecting what they hold sacred! That only turns people away! I hope that Quran-burning church closes for the sake of everyone who considers himself or herself a christian! If I lived in Fla I would consider starting a christian protest outside that church!
That is awful. Before they burn it, they should be made to read it - or read their bibles. So sad. :(
What a shocking story.
