Ciara Returns with "Love Sex Magic"

She Wants to "Make You Believe."

For those familiar with the R&B scene, many have probably noticed the curious absence of Ciara. Seems she's been having a bit of trouble since her Evolution, starting with the release of "Go Girl." Have you heard of it? Thought not. And there lies the issue. Ciara just hasn't been connecting with her audience.

Not intimidated by the failure of "Go Girl," Ciara tried once more with a track titled "Never Ever." This one has found greater success, but still is hardly the mega-hit we're used to hearing from this unique artist. Titled the "Queen of Crunk," maybe listeners are just sick of the slow jams. She took the hint.

Collaborating with Justin Timberlake, Ciara has released "Love Sex Magic." In case Timberlake's name isn't enough to give the track a guaranteed high run on the charts, Timberlake took a huge part in the writing and production. Say what you will, JT is a funky white guy, and he's not afraid to put it all out there.

Returning to the dance-pop, R&B flavorings that have always worked best for her, Ciara has a pretty solid chance of a hit with this one. The track is reminiscent of Timberlake's work, notable funky mid-tempo jams such as "Sexy Ladies" and "Rock Your Body." Veering a little off from the firmly-grounded hip-hop sound of her past efforts, one could argue that "Love Sex Magic" is really her first attempt to court the dance-pop audience. Until now, the closest she'd come was "1, 2 Step" off of her debut album Goodies.

It seems safe to say that Timberlake is gearing to knock Timbaland off his glossy production-laden throne, but that's another discussion. That's the problem, it remains to be seen if this track becomes a vehicle to rejuvenate Ciara's career, or it becomes just another testament to JT's ability to make anyone sound good.

Guess it's best to give Ciara the benefit of the doubt and reserve judgment until her next single. For now, welcome back, C!

Fantasy Ride will his store shelves on May 19. Listen to "Love Sex Magic" on-demand here.
