The stadium will be cold indeed; but Cincinnati Bengals fans, excited over a long overdue playoff spot and inspired by the memory fellow player Chris Henry, who died recently in an auto accident, are burning up with excitement. That's what really counts. Those who have followed the Bengals team from its inception have endured many ups and downs; and they know a bit of cold weather won't keep a diehard Bengal fan away.
January football in Cincinnati is always a bit cold; but fans still remember the "Freezer Bowl" at Riverfront Stadium, the now defunct venue from the days when Reds baseball and Bengals Foootball coexisted in the same stadium. It was January 10, 1982, and that playoff game went down as the the coldest NFL game in history, earning the "Freezer Bowl" designation. NBC's Dick Enberg and Merlin Olsen broadcast live while the Bengals played the San Diego Chargers in minus 9 temperatures and 27 MPH river chilled-winds nipping the air with a minus 59 degree wind chill factor.
Icy playoff games are nothing new in the Queen City. As the Bengals face off against the Jets this afternoon, it will be cold indeed, but not "Freezer Bowl" cold. Okay, so the Jets beat the Bengals badly when they met last time; but perhaps the cold chill of Paul Brown Stadium and fond memories of past playoffs will inspire the team to a new level of gridiron heat.
And as for those fans freezing in the stadium, they will be fired up and ready to go; and they won't let a little bit of cold weather keep them from cheering the Bengals to victory. Go Bengals!!
