On Cinco de Mayo, the people of Mexico
Honor their glorious victory at Puebla, May 5, 1862,
Under the brave General Ignacio Zaragoza.

Mother pins tissue flowers of red, green and white
On the dress and in the hair of little Maria.
She will dance the Mexican Hat Dance
With her friend, Juan who is dressed in the
Colors of Mexico, this Cinco de Mayo Day!
Mama and Papa will be so proud!

Cinco de Mayo, day of joy, bright with music
And dance. The maracas sing as skirts swirl
And tall, handsome senores bend over proud
And beautiful senoritas. Our hearts dance with
You, our neighbors, on this Mexican holiday!

Long Live the memory of General Ignacio Zaragoza!

Long Live the memory of 4000 Mexican soldiers
Defeating 8000 well equipped, well-financed
Fighters of the French Foreign Legion!

Long live the memory of the Indians,
Armed only with machetes, who stampeded
Hundreds of cattle in a thunderstorm through
Which the French had to charge!

VIVA! El Cinco de Mayo!
