Cinco de Mayo is a holiday in Mexico that celebrates the legendary Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Cinco de Mayo means May 5 in Spanish. On Cinco de Mayo in 1862, a Mexican force of 4,500 men faced sure doom against 6,000 well-trained French soldiers. The battle lasted four hours and the Mexican Army led by General Ignacio Zaragoza won.

Along with Mexican Independence Day on September 16, Cinco de Mayo has become a time to celebrate Mexican heritage and culture in both Mexico and the United States. Feliz Cinco de Mayo or Happy May 5th to all Mexican families. Even though the popular noisemakers, Maracas, were first used by the Native Indians of Puerto Rico, Mexican Maracas have become a popular party tool and souvenir of those who visit Mexico.
