Cinco De Mayo History, Margarita Recipe and Chili Recipe

Stacey Doyle
Cinco de Mayo history is the reason we celebrate May 5 with a tasty margarita recipe and McCormick chili recipe. Cinco de Mayo history dates back to 1862 and the Battle of Puebla. While Cinco de Mayo is not an obligatory federal holiday in Mexico or the United States, many celebrate the day with margaritas and favorite Mexican foods.

A quick review of Cinco de Mayo history revealed the commemoration of the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla. The Mexican army won on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin.

Cinco de Mayo history is celebrated worldwide in honor of Mexican pride and heritage. For me, Cinco de Mayo is a great reason to celebrate with margaritas, arroz con pollo (chicken and rice), chili and tacos.

Here is a margarita recipe in honor of el Cinco de Mayo history and traditions:

Strawberry Banana Margarita

4 oz Jose Cuervo tequila (is there any other kind?!)

4 oz. Jose Cuervo Strawberry margarita mix

Splash of lime juice

Medium size banana, peeled

Ice

Mix up the tequila, margarita mix, lime juice, ice, banana and ice until its has the consistency of a smoothie. This yummy strawberry banana margarita is healthy and intoxicating!

Now for my quickie chili recipe in honor of Cinco de Mayo history:

Mamasaid's Quickie McCormick Chili con Carne

1 lb ground sirloin

15.5 ounce can Goya red kidney beans

28 ounce can of Contadina crushed tomatoes

Small onion chopped up into tiny pieces

McCormick chili seasoning (mild, medium or hot depending on your preference)

Brown the sirloin in a skillet. Add crushed tomatoes, chopped onions, kidney beans and seasoning. Cover and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Serve with warm corn bread (Jiffy mix is ready in minutes and tastes delish!)
