Cinco De Mayo in the Hood

A Young Boy's Wonder

J. R. Steele
I wake up to a strange music;
Please tell me,
What is it?
My ears ring,
My heart sings,
Please tell me,
What is it?

I wake up to strange smells;
Please tell me,
What is it?
My nose tingles,
My stomach jingles,
Please tell me,
What is it?

Papa is outside;
There's police,
Where's he going?
Mama is in the kitchen,
She's singing, she's cooking,
What's she doing?
Somebody, please tell me,
What is all this?

Is that a parade?
I think I see the mayor.
Tia's all dressed up,
What's she done with her hair???

Tell me mama!
Surely YOU know!
She smiles,
She laughs and says,
"It's Cinco de Mayo, poquito!"
