Cinco De Mayo Mexican Decorations & More for a Party

Decorations and Food Make the Party Great

So you want to have a Cinco de Mayo or Mexican themed party this year? What is appropriate décor? Here are a few ideas to get into the mood and what you should eat.

Start with luminarios.

Luminarios involve placing a candle in two inches of sand in the bottom of a paper lunch bag. Turn the top of the bag to make a cuff. Outline the house or the walkway for guests to find the main area of the party. These should last at least 24 hours.

Next, use brightly colored cloths or runners on the serving table. Scatter votive candles. Take a Mexican sombrero and fill it with fresh or dried flowers for the centerpiece.

Dishes, bowls etc... should be pottery. Light blue, yellow or green plates, cups and bowls work well. Some specialty stores have serving bowls, napkins and more in a Mexican party theme. Wrap silverware in brightly colored napkins and tie them with yarn.

String small twinkling lights on the trees and have at least one piñata. One for children and one for adults would be great.

Decorate the patio or deck with clay pots with blooming plants or cacti.

If possible, ask guests to wear panchos or dress for the occasion in brightly colored Mexican outfits.

You may, if you want to spend the money, have a mariachi band or make a CD. See music for your playlist by clicking http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2858888/mexican_party_music_songs_great_for.html?cat=33.

Festive Mexican parties are often called Merienda's. In Mexico, a Merienda starts around 6 p.m. because big meals are eaten at noon. In the United States, Merienda's usually start around 2 p.m. You can do yours as desired.

Of course, appetizers should be served first. For a few ideas of what to serve see http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2855772/mexican_cinco_de_mayo_hot_appetizer.html?cat=22.

You can always go the 'make your own taco or burrito route' as well. In fact some people prefer to make their own because some make like it hot and others mild. As long as the Mexican flair is there, your party should be great for hours.
