You could purchase inexpensive sombrero hats. You can purchase 1 dozen hats from Oriental Trading Company for $29.99. They also sell mini hats and children sized hats. You could give the hats simply as they are, or you could allow guests to decorate them as a party activity. You could get fabric paint and allow guests to write their names on them. You could also get pom-poms, feathers and ribbon and have guests use those materials to personalize their hats!
You could make mini piñatas for your guests and fill them with small candies. You can make a piñata by inflating a small balloon. It doesn't require a whole lot of materials and is easy to do. My favorite instructions for creating your own piñata come from a website called WhoWhatWhereWhenHowWhy? You can read the instructions written by Sondra Crane here.
If you are looking for an easy craft that you can buy and assemble, you will like the Fiesta magnet kit from Oriental Trading Company. The kit makes 12 magnets and only costs $4.49 cents. You could create the magnets for your guests ahead of time, or allow them to do it as a party activity. I think young children would be delighted to create these! You can view the kit here.
If you wanted to send your guests home with a tasty treat to remember the party by, maybe you could find a bottle of chipotle sauce, or a special salsa and purchase one for each guest. You could attach your own label or gift tag to make it even more special. If you were going with a salsa theme, maybe you want to package up a small bag of tortilla chips to go along with it. Tie it with a ribbon and your favor is all set to go! If you wanted a candy themed favor, you could look for gummy cactus and package them up for a fun treat.
You could also send your guests home with a plant to remember the party. If you had a lot of time to plan, you could grow some small hot pepper plants or cilantro plants. You could also purchase these at your local nursery or garden center. You could decorate the plastic or clay pots with paints or maybe even stick a small Mexican flag into the pot.
I hope you have a wonderful Cinco De Mayo party. I can't wait to finish planning my own party and have my friends over!
