I recently had the opportunity to eat at a newer restaurant in Toledo called Cinco de Mayo. It is located at 304 E. Alexis Rd (SR-184) just East of Telegraph (US-24). It is located in a building that once housed a Bob Evans Restaurant. It has been open since March of 2008. They claim to have Toledo's most authentic Mexican food. They have created a very festive atmosphere by colorful decorations and a liberal amount of neon lighting.
I was in Toledo with two friends and we actually found this place by accident. The driver (not me) missed the driveway for the restaurant we were going to originally. My party was seated promptly and we started the night with a couple bottles of a dark Mexican beer named "Negro Modello". In addition to beer, numerous other alcoholic beverages are available. I saw several other customers drinking margaritas, and they seemed to be enjoying themselves. Along with our beer we were served some freshly made tortilla chips. These chips were warm and served with a salsa that was very chunky and had a medium heat. It was spicy, but not too spicy. I liked the flavor and texture both. The chips are refilled as needed, so you never have to worry about running out.
Cinco de Mayo has a menu with numerous combinations of Mexican food. I had a dish that had 2 chicken taquitos and 2 beef taquitos. It also came with guacamole, refried beans, sour cream, and rice. These are not the little taquitos you might find in your grocer's freezer. These taquitos were about the size of a hot dog bun. They were spicy, crunchy and very satisfying.
My other guests had the chimichangas. They commented that they were very tasty, and the texture and spiciness was right on target. By the time we finished the food, we were stuffed and had no room for dessert. The portion sizes are above average.
Cinco de Mayo has most of their menu items listed by number. I ordered a number 27. The prices of most of the entrees ranged from around seven to twelve dollars. Pretty good value for the quality and quantity of food.
Our bill came to the table, and it was very reasonable to feed three people. It was about thirty dollars, if you don't count the beer.
The service was exceptionally good. We never had to wait for any of our food. It was always right on time and hot. We got our second beer even before we finished the first ones.
If you are in Toledo, Ohio and you are hungry for Mexican food, I recommend Cinco de Mayo.
