Cinco De Mayo Traditions Around the World

Jamie Brown
The first thing that comes to mind when I think of Cinco de Mayo is "party!" It's a fun, light-hearted holiday that gives everybody an excuse to hit the bars and Mexican restaurants (even though most of us do this anyway). In some places, there are parades, festivals, and clubs dedicated this "5th of May" celebration. So grab a Mexican sombrero and some maracas -- for the ladies get a great sexy senorita Mexican dress -- and get ready to party at these great Cinco de Mayo celebrations worldwide!

Puebla, Mexico

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated most notably in Puebla, Mexico. This is where the Mexicans defeated the French in battle on May 5, 1862. In Puebla, the residents hold a huge parade that rivals that of carnivals in the Caribbean. Troops, school kids, rescue workers, and bands all hit the parade trail. There are vendors selling tacos, fruits, and other Mexican cuisine. Some parade goers help re-enact the battle of Puebla by taking on the role of the French soldiers who were scared away by the Mexican troops on that fateful day in 1862.

Los Angeles, U.S.

Due to the fact that there are over 45 million Mexicans in America according to recent statistics, it's not surprising that Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in many different cities in the United States. In Los Angeles, some people practice the tradition of visiting Mexican bars on St. Patty's Day and Irish bars on Cinco de Mayo.

New York, NY

In New York, Cinco de Mayo has the exact same feel as St. Patrick's Day --- people of Mexican descent and even those who aren't Mexican, celebrate this fun holiday by visiting Mexican restaurants and bars in the city (Manhattan) and reveling in the streets.

Port Huron, Michigan

There is also a huge Cinco de Mayo celebration held in Port Huron, Michigan (where there is a strong community of Mexican Americans) that includes a festival and parade that commences early in the day, as well as plenty of bar hopping later on. The Our Lady of Guadalupe restaurant and in Port Huron usually has a Cinco de Mayo bash full of Mexican food and music.

Vancouver, Canada

In Vancouver, Canada, the Abbotsford Drop Zone holds a special annual Cinco de Mayo skydiving event where participants are encouraged to "take the plunge" and fly high in commemoration of this electrifying Mexican holiday. You might want to save that Mexican meal for AFTER this exciting event.
