Seventeen year-old Texan, Dan Hunter is the 'poptronica' genius behind PlayRadioPlay (PRP), his site has already hit over one million plays on MySpace and he has opened for Fall Out Boy in many more all in the space of a single year. The highly anticipated EP The Frequency became available in stores April 24, 2007. Dan has a devoted fan base that discovered his music at myspace. Soon word got around about Dan and many more were tuning in and listening to his music. Soon he was signed to a record label.
May 30th I got to speak with Dan Hunter on the phone for a short interview.
What got you interested in making music with your computer?
Dan - High school, in a music class at my high school. In that class I learned to use Fruity Loops and some other computer programs that make music. So that's how I got started. Then from there I staring writing songs.
What made you decide to put your music on myspace?
Dan - I don't know really. I just started to share my music and it kind of stuck.
What did you think or feel when you first realized that people were really enjoying your music?
Dan - I was excited. It was exciting that so many liked it.
For those who haven't heard of Play Radio Play will you explain how all this came about and what your music is all about?
Dan - I started doing music when I was 14 or 15. It's electronic based pop/rock. I write from my feelings and things I experience.
The Frequency EP was released April 24th correct?
Dan - Yes
How has it done so far?
Dan - It is doing well
Can you describe how it feels to start a hobby on your computer and now have that hobby turn into something that has gotten you lots of fans and a commercial EP and upcoming album?
Dan - Yes it's just amazing.
How different is the EP from the full length album?
Dan - The EP was entirely self produced and self recorded. The full length album is produced and recorded with Lester Mendez and Garret Lee. It's a wider sound. Things lay out better on the album, so that the song stays interesting and fresh.
When is the full length album do out?
Dan - January 2008
I have been listening to your music at myspace and my favorite of what I've heard so far is Confines.
What gave you the idea for it?
Dan - I have that music for that track for awhile it was one of the first that I programmed. So I added the words and it just kind of came together.
There is a video for Confines right?
Dan - Yes
Can it be viewed online?
Dan - Yes it can be viewed at the Stolen Transmission site.
Who will you be playing with or opening for, and who have you already played or opened for?
Dan - I've opened for, Fall Out Boys, Young Love and Avril Lavigne and I'm doing Warped Tour this summer.
Do you have any advice for someone who is trying to be discovered?
Dan - Yes, record labels are on myspace a lot these days. So get your music on there and maybe you will get a following and then they will discover you.
Well thank you for speaking with me, do you want to say anything else to your fans?
Dan - Yea don't forget the album comes out January 2008 and thanks everyone.
