Cinemas Curbing Talkers: Regal Guest Response System May Let You Finally Watch a Movie in Peace

Mary Kirkland
When was the last time you went to the theatre? For alot of people it's been a while. With the cost of a movie ticket being priced between $8 and $10, most people would rather rent it on DVD and watch it at home. Not because it costs too much, but because it's hard to watch a movie in the theatre when so many people around you are talking on their cell phones, chatting with the person three rows behind them or throwing popcorn at everyone in front of them.

The fun theatre experience that once was, is now hindered by crying babies, teens talking while kicking the back of your seat, people constantly chatting on their cell phones, not to mention the arguments that break out in the middle of the movie.

Soon all of these annoyances may be a thing of the past and the theatre experience will no longer be held hostage by annoying people who think they can do whatever they wish.

Regal Cinemas has started a program at certain locations where a few mature movie goers are given hand held devices, much like a beeper that has buttons for specific problems in the movie theatre. They will now be able to report such problems as people talking during the movie, cell phone users, people illegally video taping the movie, projector problems, temperature problems as well as any number of other problems. As soon as you push the button an Usher will come into the theatre and find out what the problem is. Cell phone users as well as trouble makers may be escorted out.

People reporting problems will be rewarded with free popcorn.

While this is being tested only in certain areas at the moment, if successful the system may be coming to all Regal Cinemas nationwide. Most people don't want to be troubled with having to get up out of their seat, go to the ushers to report someone chatting, miss part of the movie they paid good money to see and get dirty looks from other people in the theatre for being a tattle tale. Now you don't have to, just press the button and it will be taken care of.

According to Regal Chief Executive Michael Campbell, most customers don't complain about talkers while the movie is running. They wait until they are leaving to complain and some are so annoyed with the theatre experience they just don't come back.

Awesome. I don't go to movie theaters anymore, because I have a baby daughter... which I suppose makes me more considerate than those idiots who brought their little baby to 28 Days Later and then yelled at the kid for crying during the scary and loud parts. Blah. Anyway, I'm glad this program is in place.

A reward is good. It helps the problem. However in a less packed theatre with a close friend or loved one, I do tend to make side comments but its never loud and i always sit away from people ex) a scary movie "dont open that door" in a soft whisper.

Great article and a great idea, I rarely go to the movie theatre anymore but when I do I would sure like to have one of those things.

I went to see the new pirates of the caribbean movie a couple weeks ago, and a group of highschoolers were sitting directly behind me. They we talking LOUD, kicking my chair, jumping up to switch seats, throwing popcorn - one idiot tripped and nearly sat on my head! Someone was running their mouth so much that their gum popped out and landed in my guests lap. Finally, I turned around and yelled "Would you all just SHUT UP!!" And *I* got in trouble for disturbing the movie. Meh. Idiots. All of them. IMHO. Good article.

People reporting problems will be rewarded free popcorn? :-o . Oh gosh that slew me. People really should just be more considerate in movies. Society is just too loud, period. Great article

I haven't heard of this until now, interesting. I certainly have to agree with Carol on the manners issue. It is sad that something like this has to be done in the first place just to be able to watch a movie in peace. Great article and thanks for the info.

We need to do a better job teaching manners as a society so things like this aren't needed.

This sounds like a great idea~it is awful when inconsiderate people ruin the whole movie for you!!
