Cinnamon - a Super Bark for Health!
Learn About the Many Health Benefits of This Humble Kitchen Staple
Health indications for Cinnamon include Raynaud's Disease (contraction of small arteries in fingers and toes that results in coldness and numbness), Scleroderma (skin disease resulting in tightening and thickening of the dermis),2 stomach upset, arthritis, bronchitis, candida (mouth and other), parasites (including lice), psoriasis, asthma, flatulence, and possibly diabetes and high blood sugar.3 These are just a few of the benefits of Cinnamon.
In regard to blood sugar, "one-eighth of a teaspoon of cinnamon triples insulin efficiency," say James A. Duke, Ph.D., a botanist retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and author of The CRC Handbook of Medicinal Herbs. Dr. Duke suggests that people with adult-onset diabetes discuss Cinnamon's benefits with their doctor. Taking one-half to three-quarters of a teaspoon of ground Cinnamon with each meal may help control blood sugar levels."4
The jury may still be out on whether the bark significantly impacts blood sugar, as my doctor said he read a recent study refuting these benefits. However, a good friend of mine who was experiencing the beginnings of diabetes was helped with Cinnamon, and within a few months he signficantly lowered his blood sugar - a feat his doctor could hardly believe when viewing his next blood results.
According to HerbWisdom.com, "...one German study showed that Cinnamon 'suppresses completely' the cause of most urinary-tract infections (Escherichia coli bacteria) and the fungus responsible for vaginal yeast infections (Candida albicans)."5
Honey is often combined with Cinnamon in Ayurvedic preparations, and those suffering from Eczema have seen great results.6
My favorite Cinnamon preparation is by Gaia Herbs. Their Cinnamon Bark Phyto-Caps contains a LIQUID form of the herb, allowing fast absorption and quick results. I use Professional Solutions (a professional brand of Gaia) Liquid Phyto-Caps Cinnamon to help with cold hands and feet and stomach upsets with excellent results.
