When entering the bar, one can realize the feel of the atmosphere right off the bat. A dark staircase leads down to an equally dark bar area. Dimly light chandeliers and tabletop candles are abundant giving the space a eerie "old house" image. Large framed mirrors, abstract art, and dripping lines of paint align the walls, reinforcing a very gothic old school mansion-like feeling.
Yet, even with the semi-creepy demeanor there is still a homey feeling with the several sitting areas as well as TVs to watch the game. Standing high top tables line the middle for those who are looking to gather for a drink or two with friends.
The music is a mixture of rock, pop and techno remixes that can get you moving in your seat or even up dancing in the open areas.
The beer selection is limited to the in-house brews, but the list does offer a taste for everyone. The best part is that the beers are cheap (pints are only $4!) and they do offer a hefty sampler for $9 to try out all the flavors and pick a favorite. Also, mostly all liquors are available for mix drinks. Ask about drink specials, as well as the food menu. While the food menu is limited, it does offer more than the typical burger and French fires. There is an assortment of pizzas as well as appetizers to choose from.
Commune also does offer three VIP rooms that can be reserved for parties at no additional cost. Just a phone call to reserve and rooms are available on a first come first serve basis. Each room includes a private sitting area, TV, and personal wait staff. The rooms can then be sectioned off by curtains to gain some privacy but not as to entirely cut off the rest of the bar.
Commune is located underneath the trendy restaurant, Bastone, on the northeast corner of 5th Street and Main in downtown Royal Oak. If you are looking for a new place to grab a drink with friend Commune is a good choice! Enjoy!
