Circumcision: A Tough Decision for New Parents

Shelia West
Circumcision is the medical procedure of removing the foreskin from the head of the penis. It is a practice that has been in existence for centuries. But is the procedure actually beneficial to the male?

Deciding whether or not to have their infant son circumcised is a decision most parents have to face within days of their child's birth. Doctors recommend doing the procedure as early as possible. Therefore it is usually done before the infant boy leaves the hospital after his birth.

Some doctors concede there may not be many, if any, medical reasons for circumcising a male infant. While others maintain that the procedure promotes better hygiene and less chances of infections.

While some parents may not have any problem deciding, it is often confusing to parents who are not familiar with the idea. That's why parents should begin researching the procedure before the baby's birth. There are countless websites that new parents can check to help them make an informed decision. By reading and discussing the procedure before the birth of their child, they are less likely to feel confused and unsure.

Some websites will promote circumcision and others are definitely anti. It is important that expectant parents weigh all the pros and cons. Medical or educational websites are mostly impartial and will list both the benefits and the risks involved. And there are some risks involved.

Expecting parents should also talk to their doctor about the procedure. Get him to explain what exactly is done and how. You can ask his opinion on the procedure. Talk to him about what risks are involved and what, if any serious complications could develop. You may want to talk to other parents and to family members about their experiences or knowledge. However, keep in mind, it is only others' opinions, and the decision should be made by the parents.

One of the drawbacks parents felt in the past was the fact that doctors did not use any type of anesthesia. That's right, none. However, it has become more common, but only recently to use some type of anesthesia before the surgery. But all new parents should make sure that the doctor uses anesthesia. Don't take it for granted.

The decision to have a baby boy circumcised is not an easy one. However, by researching and talking to doctors and others before the actual birth, new parents should have an easier time of making this decision.
